The ribs were on cast iron wheels to disapate heat and were not needed with the newer steel wheels as much. Some of the first steel wheels "may" have had ribs but, not to my knowledge.

I finished assembly on my USRA Accurail 50 ton hopper (one of the ones sold by ARHS) and find it has no brake wheel. None in the box and none on the assembly diagram. Is it supposed to have one

Gene, I don't know about those cars, but on the CPR dreadnaught ends and truss rods were found on re-builds from the mid 1920's. The one I have measured and photographed also had a steel centre sill

I expect the US was like Canada and shipped poles and piles from the Rocky Mountains to the east coast in gondolas and flat cars.
