Without knowing your exact purpose, would an airbrushed layer of
gray paint accomplish the same thing? It would have a more even

Ted, when you figure it out let us know! :o) I have
always used soft lead pencil on styrene, but not for
masters. The lead can be erased about 98% with a white
plastic eraser.

could have been methyl alcohol (methanol), not isopropyl. Methyl

used to remove it would.Also,if your making patterns for RTV

I thought it might be in the south, because there is an MP rebuilt
box car among Jim Sands' photos -- unfortunately it's painted in a
completely bogus style; but appears to be in excellent condition.
