Re: RE SP Steel Sided USRA Box Cars
Too short? Height wise? or Width wise? The alternative would be
to scratch some ends like Ted Culotta did for his UP box car. Making
pointed ends on all those little ribs doesn't sound like fun!

The SP ends were quite extensively reworked and would be a tedious kitbash (pattern is 5/4/5/3). The Tichy ends are considerably too short as well as being the wrong pattern.

Re: Water in mines (was: northeast hopper question)
Larry,
You were told right, and it wasn't just coal mines. One gold mine I
know of was the Empire Mine in Nevada County, which ceased production
following a strike and flooding of the mine in 1956

Thanks,
I'm going to have to buy the MM back issue. Off the top of your
head, were the ends reworked from the originals? If so, I think I
could use the Tichy ends for their P&LE steel side

Are they prone to show rust?

Ben,
I think I have been past that plant. Doesn't it still have a siding? It is still operating, and if so, do they ship by rail? I didn't notice any significant activity. I will be in the area again
