Ed has it right... I have worked around flat cars long enough to know that not many had much of an untreated wood appearance... Most are one of the 256 possible shades of black to gray. Modern

Although they weren't used in interchange service and the decks didn't
absorb any of the load, the YV log cars replaced the deck (and bulkhead)
boards using the cheapest, green lumber available.

I also know that many flat car decks were untreated oak, which, when wet, will turn black because of the interaction of the

During the Steam Era, very few flat car decks used creosoted lumber. Most
decks were built from hardwoods, without any preservatives.

It's possible that some were but many were not. The gray on the
multilayers paint job is for weathered wood which will turn gray. This also
may be an era thing.

Have any of you ever sat on a flatcar deck? Or really looked at one! I
guess not!
The wood used on flat cars decks were treated with Creosote just as are
wood ties on the track. Look at them.

and the color is called out as
