they did paper sides in the early days of HO<
I think it might have been an X23. I seem to remember that Red Ball had
one of those that used cast sides.

I recall seeing vertical brake staffs very rarely in the 1970's. I think the
limiting date was the date that removed rooftop running boards and ladders.
