Interesting as the site still has fall 2004. I did leave a phone
message asking them about the painting/era REA vs REX and have heard nothing
from them.

I like that smoke unit idea!
Some coke was produced (and then screened) to a rather large chunk size for
certain uses, and could be shipped in certain cars without falling through
the slats.

a bit. Put a smoke unit in the pile of coke and let it smoke during a

The ORERs would answer this question conclusively, but it's safe to
generalize that most cars built before WW I with all wood superstructures
were retired during the depression in the 1930s, rebuilt

While the Railway Express Agency was formed in 1929, I have found no evidence of cars with REX reporting appearing until circa 1940 (after the Southeastern Express Company became part of it).
