Ammonia was used in the compressor as Freon was in later years. I worked in creamery that had an ammonia system instead freon.

Steve, I think fairly small amounts of refrigerant are consumed but
since it's a closed system, you would not see daily or weekly tank
cars coming into the ice plant.

Weren't many of the early ice plants based on ammonia? Was that ammonia consumed in some way? I know little about ice plants. I am just thinking of the possible need to bring ammonia into the ice

Further to Garth's message, the reason the domes are smaller on
multi-compartment cars is because the dome size is proportional to the tank compartment
size. So a 3-compartment, 6,000 gallon car
