I don't have any steam era color photos of these cars but my educated guess
based on WM practice at the time would be that they were oxide red when
built.

Yes that is an air powered jack. Also if you notice there is a steel plate resting on the bottom of the wheel, this goes under the jack and helps to keep the wheel from lifting with the side

I was the national S scale promotions chairman last year. One thing I was pushing for then, and still now, is better and more accurate models.
But in a way, doesn't this get to a catch 22 situation?
