Re: Boxcar identification assistance
Pretty sure that it is a boxcar, it is taller than the adjacent N&W car, it appears to have a solid edge to the LH side of the door and a black placard board centered on the door.
Even zooming in

Re: Boxcar identification assistance
Kaolin clay was once transported in boxcars and left a white residue, but not to the extent to completely coat the car.
But are you sure the car is a boxcar? While the photo is limited in size and

Re: Earliest Color Photo of US Freight Cars?
I did not see the tank cars in the Russian photo until I downloaded the 40MB tiff file. Overall the photo is quite sharp and the color is much richer than the Boston wharf photo. Thanks for sharing

Re: Boxcar identification assistance
I'm going to comment here and I'm not speaking from actual knowledge of the white freight car but to me it looks like a standard 40 boxcar that was being loaded with cement or another white powdery

Schuyler,
I had that same thought. In some ways, the photo reminds me of the Pacific Northwest. But then there's the locomotives. And then.....
Did ya notice the string of tank cars?

Re: Earliest Color Photo of US Freight Cars?
Interesting photo Ed.
I am moved to observe that the freight equipment doesnโt look, in terms of coloration, much different than 40 years later in the US.
