NKP operated two types of side-door way cars well into the 1950s. I
understand the Indiana state law required a front-end way car if the
train was over a certain length.

They're not AAR Alternates, as the ribs are unevenly spaced. Since they
are parked next to two long strings of NYC boxcars, I'll guess that they're
the NYC's 31'6-il version of the AAR car.

had a door for express and parcels, i.e. the IC versions.
What I would call a side door caboose had no end platforms or

I never saw an IC crewman enter or leave a caboose through those side

were opened to inspect the sides of the train and to grab train
