That must have been some pretty thin stock to have fitted so many coils in those old gondolas.
I'm most familiar with much heavier coils that were shipped from USS Geneva in Utah to

Mont and Andy;
Industry guys generally summarize it this way: Hot coil, because it does not require weather protection (since it undergoes additional treatment elsewhere, or not at all) goes eyes

Re: Photo: Jeeps On Chicago Great Western Flat Car
Those are 1/4 ton jeep trailers, on one of them you can see the stepped top. The 1 ton trailers have a large stamped steel landing wheel which would be visible. I have a 1945 Ben-Hur one ton trailer.

B&M covered hopper 5599 / KCEX #119
According to Tim Gilbert, B&M covered hopper 5599 (purchased by the B&M 1954, later renumbered 010) was ex-KCEX #119, built "1916" (!!! pretty sure that's a typo)
I can't find those reporting marks in

Re: coil gondola shipping early problems
I would suspect in that era the original coils were shipped on end in closed (boxcars) cars with lots of blocking and bracing. Enclosed cars helps prevent rust, dirt, etc. for the same reasons most
