The Spruce Goose was made of birch plywood, not spruce. The spruce originally was used for WWI airplanes.

Definitely wood chips. At that point in the 1950s (1958), Georgia Pacific was shipping wood chips from the mill at Toledo, Oregon. GP purchased the Toledo mill from C.D. Johnson in 1956. I

Re: C&O Bunk Cars and Jordan Spreader
Thanks for these, Garth. The bunk cars are really interesting, and your shots are very clear and definitive. Did you by any chance see the opposite sides? were they the same?

Woodchips, most likely for paper manufacture.
The SP sent a lot of chips up their line to Portland and on via the NP to Longview Fiber in Longview WA.

Re: SHPX ORER help needed
Hi Eric,
My collection of photos of SHPX LO’s is very limited. The ones that I have that are legible are all photos of new cars that have not been reweighed.
Sorry,

The photo date is given as March, 1912. The safety appliances look like a work in progress. The grabs look OK, but that sill step is iffy.

Re: National Car Co. NX 6898
It looks to me as if the letter "i" in "Meat Rail" was left off the stenciling over the door. But maybe it's just the angle of the photo.

I'm pretty sure the buyer specified what they wanted for all such features, rather than GATC doing "what they liked to do."
