John Barry
Good news for the thirteen folks that identified themselves in need of an underframe for the 2020 Shake and Take Bx-34 project: your underframes are the mail for priority mail delivery. This still leaves seven folks who received kits at CCB that are still missing their underframes, but I have no clue who you are. Hi Rupert, I didn’t find anything more either. It suggested the B&W within the diamond may mean something else. Thanks mate. Good to hear you are staying safe too – NZ has done brilliantly.. My greater concern is how we keep the Victorians out of New South Wales! (VBG) Cheers Dave

Al,
When I was building D-8's I talked to a guy who owned one or two of them. I concluded from the conversation that a 70T flat would not handle 2 of them.
I've googled other CAT models and base data was pretty complete. Many CAT model designations remained consistent over the years.
You can buy pre and post CAT touch up paint at many farm/fleet stores. The color changed around 1970 when they took the lead out of their paint.

I haven't loaded my pretty little Artitec D7 onto a flatcar yet, because I'm not sure what car is appropriate: 40-foot? 50-foot? 40-ton? 50-ton? 70-ton?

Re: Photo: Flat Car Load - Identity Of Items
Nelson Moyer
I missed the photo under discussion, but the mod to the USRA GS-15 class was to remove 18 in. from the bottom of the sides on the first few cars, then 15 in. on the rest of those modified. The result was that the V at the bottom side sill was no longer a V, having been truncated. The Walthers model is a pretty good version of the original GS-15, but it would have to be modified for my era, and I haven’t wanted to take a razor saw to it just yet.

Rob- I don’t think this is a rebuilding any of a CB&Q USRA GS gondola. While it is true that their own 40’ composite gondolas were similar and may have been inspired by some of the features of the USRA cars, I do not believe that they were to resemble the Q design cars. The car in question looks like a GS -8 class car which is having the very lower part of the diagonals replaced where they connect to the vertical members (probably due to having rusted out). The USRA have verticals extend a small amount beyond the side sill and both verticals and diagonals are directly attached to the frame. Also note the characteristic GS-8 pulling loop plate in front of the nearest vertical. Charlie Vlk

Bob, Upon close examination the gondola on the right is a CB&Q rebuild of an USRA GS gondola. I am building one or two of these from IM's kits. These were Mineral Red used in revenue coal service as well as Light Orange for MOW service. Thanks for your research.

David, what's the spotting feature you noticed? The diameter and length of the tank for its nominal capacity, and the tank saddle construction are characteristic of mid-20s AC&F practice. The lack of side sills makes it a 25 or 26. The photo in question is hard to make a definitive statement on, but 26 was by far the less rare variety. David Thompson

Re: Photo: PRR Flatcar 47068 With Grader Load
Al,
1938-
Length 160 in (410 cm)
Width 97 in (250 cm)
Height 96 in (240 cm)
Weight 31,870 lb (14,460 kg)
One will easily fit on a 40 foot, 40-ton flat. Two can probably fit.

Re: Photo: PRR Flatcar 47068 With Grader Load
The Artitec model Cat D7 is a WWII vintage machine. With minor modifications it is typical of such crawlers made from the 1930s to 1950’s. Of course they lasted much longer, and some are still around. Such early model Cat D7, similar to the Artitec model, weighs about 12 tons. Add a couple more for the blade and winch … perhaps 16 tons max. Thus any common flatcar can carry one, and most could carry two.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The D7’s larger stablemate, the D8, is in the 18-20 ton range depending on accessories. The GHQ Cat D8 is also a WWII vintage machine. Modern D7 crawlers are larger and heavier, and look different. Dan Mitchell ==========
