Re: Photo: Trainload of Maytag Washers
Perhaps all the way to Council Bluffs... but routings were under the strict control of the SHIPPERS, not the railroads, when the tariffs offered alternative routes. A few nights on the town for the Maytag traffic manager at railroads' expense and those box cars could go just about anywhere. :-) On 12/2/2019 8:40 AM, Douglas Harding wrote:

Re: DL&W hopper & box cars from Nov 1925 on Steamtown site today

This 1925 image illustrates an early application of an updated data presentation on all of these freight cars. The post-USRA data was often presented as such:
CAPACITY - covering two lines of figures for cubic feet and weight capacity
WT - which is the light weight
In early 1925, the ARA recommended removing the cubic capacity from the CAPACITY line to only present the car capacity in pounds. The WT stencil was altered to present as LIGHT WT, or LT WT. The LOAD LIMIT stencil was being considered about this time but wouldn't become an official recommendation for another year. These changes made all the data figures stenciled that area of the same units of measurement; pounds. The cubic feet data moved to the right side of the car with the dimensional info; IL, IH, etc. Some railroads began applying it early, as we see on these Lackawanna cars.
You will find builder photos of new cars from 1925 and 1926 the the earlier CAPACITY presentation, along with builder photos of cars with the updated preferences. IIRC, I have builder photos of two B&O freight cars. One built in late 1925 has the updated data presentation while another from early 1926 has the older data presentation applied. Here's a PDF illustrating two lettering guidelines of that period.
Note these cars all retain the hardware inventory listings on the right side of the car. This presentation would slowing fade from practice.
Of course, a few railroads did their own thang (hello Northern Pacific!) until later in the 1930s.
These are a few of the nuances to understand when modeling the mid-1920s. It really is fun! (Cue several eye rolls now....)

WP conversion
Paul Doggett
Hi guys
The Accurail conversion is ready for painting and decals for WP I have left the original roof as Tony Thompson reckons some got steel roofs at some stage. The kit bashing is not perfect as I reckon it’s slightly to high but will be a reasonable stand in. Paul Doggett. England 🏴

Thank you, I have found some decals that will do I am leaving the roof as Tony Thompson said some got metal roofs and the underframe has been modified with evergreen channel so it’s not a fishbelly the air reservoir has also been moved. When it’s painted I will post another photo I suspect it’s a bit to high but makes a reasonable stand in. Paul

Andy, I tried to order these castings from you. You had already decided to end production and sent my check back. I later managed to pick up both sets of castings on the used market. Someday I will get around to building them. They're at the top of my list, but other non-railroad projects and my O-scale interests are in the way. You are correct about both the moribund WP and SN web groups. From being quite active a few years ago, they are now virtual dead zones. Both groups are still open on Yahoo, though the list owners also migrated them to Groups IO. I may be the only person who has posted to either at the new location, and got no replies. Or maybe I'm somehow blocked; some servers don't play well with CenturyLink/Embarq, but I'm not getting anything via my gmail account either. (Sigh!) Yours Aye, Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆

Made a start (WP SS boxcar)
Andy Carlson
I offered HO WP 40' SS resin box car kits 20+ years ago and I was selling as many as I received orders for. I doubt that I sold more that 30 kits. I even sold far fewer of the 40' stock cars which the WP made in 1937 from donor 40' box cars. I have found that WP modelers were very unsupportive back then and I would not be surprised to see that things have changed this last 2 decades. However, I have found that the GN folks were pretty positive and I appreciated their support. Before I dump more on the WP crowd, I remind myself that they are not very large in numbers. The WP modelers io site often gets less than 12 postings per month. Yet the few modelers have some very proven talent. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

We've discussed the Single Sheath boxcars over on the WP Modelers FB site a couple of times. Bill Kennedy has decals that cover the 26000 series with the proper medallion. Here is an image of the cars in Plaster service that covers the roof a little better (but not perfectly). I keep playing with doing the Accurail conversion, but the more details I find out about the prototype, the more I keep going back to Sketch-up and playing with making parts to make a pattern master for Andrew Dahm to cast. It's doable - if I could just get the time. Such a common lament... RJ Dial Burlingame, CA
