Details west;

I can't find Detail Associates online. If you know your parts numbers, Google them- you may get lucky!

That was my concern too Bruce - Hence the reason for my caution in using that image for colour comparison.  I think I can see undertones of a brown here and there, particularly around the door, so the possibility it is a very sooty version of the brown colour is at not inconceivable to me.  But it is such a distant image, it is hard to do much to manipulate (at least with the software i have access to).

Ideally we could find a colour photo of a USRA car in the earlier colour paint for reference.  But i’ve had no luck so far . . .

BRAKE COMPONENT LOCATIONS

WILLIAM PARDIE

I was just examining a recently purchase of a Milwaukee 40 ft rib sided boxcar from Exactarail.  I am quite pleased with the model, however, I noticed a rather unique arrangement (to me) of the brake components.   All three components are on the same side of the center sill.  I was aware that the Milwaukee used this arrangement.  What seemed unique is that the triple valve was on the outer edge of the underbody and the brake reservoir was directly between the triple valve and the center sill.

Milwaukee apparently used various locations for the components on their rib sided cars.  On the 50' version the brake cylinder and the air reservoiare on one side and the triple valve on thr other.  It took quite a while of studying photos to determine thuis. Does anyone have a underbody diagram that would validate the placement of the parts on the 40' car?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Weathering

Eric Hansmann

Thanks, Charlie. I’ve come to believe weathering is all about layers of material and color.

I always encourage modelers to keep weathering stuff. Don't just weather one car and wait six to eight months to do another. You don’t retain the info you learned. Do two or three models at a time. Then do another batch the next week. And more after that. It’s not like most of us don’t have extra freight cars that need to be weathered.

You can't expect to improve if you aren't doing the task frequently.

Nice overview, not everyone thinks they have the skill sets for weathering and your approach makes for an easy ‘dip in the pool’.  I remember back in the 1970’s using merely an airbrush to add ‘dust’ on a few boxcars and thought that was enough.  Now we’ve got a whole art store at our disposal.

Subject: Re: [RealSTMFC] ATSF Flat Cars

Interesting photo of a flat car that took a bit of research to identify.

1.  Santa Fe work cars had the first letter of car classification changed to "W" from the revenue car class.   Wt-16 stencilling implies Ft-16.  Ft-16s were drawbar connected Ft-M flatcars used in TOFC service.  About 202 Ft-Ms were converted into 101 Ft-16s beginning in 1958.

2.  The 40'0" length stencilled is incorrect and confusing.   Ft-Ms were 44'6".

3.  Stake pocket numbers and positions match Ft-M photos.  The double vertical rivet rows appear to match also.

4.  The stencilled 1924 build date is correct for the 500 car Ft-M class.

5. There was a 200 car Ft-L class of 50'0" length built  in 1924 with fishbelly side sills but the stake pockets are located differently and there are no double vertical river rows.

This is an Ft-M that avoided the lengthening to 53'6" and application of bulkheads of the early 50's that some of these cars experienced.  It later became a drawbar connected TOFC car.

The original number series was 97001-97500.  469 of the original 500 were in the January 1953 ORER.

Re: Detail parts availability

Be aware that DA and DW likely have the parts. Walthers, for whatever reason, often fails to restock. Contact them directly.

Thanks!

Can someone tell me if Detail Associates and Details West are
still in business and filling current orders? I have had a couple
of Detail Associates items backordered through WKW since
2016 and 2018. Thank you. You can respond off list if you want.

Rob,

You mentioned the B&O USRA model, be aware that several folks on the B&O .IO Group have raised a concern about this color not being very accurate. I agree with their assessment, it appears more like OD Green than the brown I have seen in the limited number of color photos of B&O brown boxcars.

I have attached some photos, the model by itself was after some black pin wash was added around the steel parts, it was shot in sunlight. The other shots are with both commercial products and my own painted resin kits on my layout under 5000k LED lights. And the prototype photo is a Delano from the LOC. The contrast in color is easy to see. I am going to try airbrushing with clear matte tinted with red brown.
