Very good-looking car, Eric. But presumably the Archer “rivets” represent bolt heads on a car like this?

I’ve never had to resort to pipe joint tubes since using PS stanchions. It’s not all that difficult to cut and fit wire ends into the two wide stanchions placed on the ends of opposite sides.

The prototype railings were painted also. Is a coat of freight car paint applied with an industrial spray rig 87 times thicker than a thin coat of model paint applied with an airbrush? I suspect this would be a wash, for our purposes.

Probably the best approach is to use the eye test, i.e. which wire diameter looks better compared to prototype photographs?

I like the look of the 0.020 in. wire. It’s harder to drill the stanchions with the larger bit required, but not all that much if you start with a #79 bit and work up to a #76.

Thanx Matt.   My standard procedure for 40 years has been to wash before painting a model.   But, first time I ever had the described situation.   Now I will have to save that toothbrush strictly for wheels and side frames.

Need Instruction Sheet for Sunshine Models kit # 32.18 D&M 10' IH 1944 AAR Boxcar

Robert J Miller CFA <cajonpass1995@...>

Good afternoon all.

I recently purchased one of these kits on E-Bay. It appears all the parts are present along with the notice about the maroon vs. black lettering. However, the assembly instructions, etc. are missing.

If anyone has them from a similar kit a PDF to me at cajonpass1995@... would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rapido X-3 Tank cars

The best assortment of wire of all kinds I've seen has been at Des Plaines Hobbies. But the
piano/guitar wires and stainless steel wires are far too stiff for bending handrails. For perfectly
straight pieces, they're great. I still have a couple pieces left of DA .019 wire but the others are
harder stuff. You can still easily buy phosphor-bronze .020 wire, which I guess is close enough.

I've used them under the Central Vermont milk cars offered by F&C. At least judging from photos in various sources and the drawing in F&Cs instructions, they were about right.

(If anyone knows where that drawing was originally published I'd appreciate knowing. Not Model Railroader or Mainline Modeler I don't think - RMC perhaps?)

Mine arrived two days ago.

That point about weathering is on my mind too.  I’m looking at my B&O car in the old brown colour and starting to consider the options.

I notice the car body uses grooves to delineate the side sheathing.   While the grooves are reasonably done, i’ll want to be wary about weathering the car in a way that accentuates them, and instead focus on toning down the overall “model” appearance.

there are several ATSF flatcars photographed in 1985 that appear to be quite old, but the road numbers are not in my 1963 ORER.
Perhaps they are renumbered for MOW or specialized service?
Might anybody recognize an earlier number series for these cars?
