brake hose brackets was Carmer uncoupling levers for C&O hopper
Jared,
There are a number of brackets out there.
PSC does a nice brass one that you can get separately as well as with their hoses that is a “strap” style.
Kadee does one in plastic (and Dennis says Zamac) that is a cast bracket offset to one side
HiTech offers a brass one that is a cast version that has a bigger drop than the PSC and has a strengthening rib
Yarmouth offers the bent strap style with the additional ability to add a separate retaining loop of wire for the hose. Regards,
Bruce

Doesn't the PSC brake hose come with this bracket?

I bought a few dozen air hose brackets from PSC years ago when they first came out and it was PSC part number 39156. It looks like casting 1.

Based on the photos, I’m going to go with a combination of lifting lever 2, operating lever 1. I don’t think that these are an exact match for the C&O cars, but they are pretty close. The operating lever has a handle that is well below the pivot,
as does OL1, although the angled section on the prototype appears to be a bit more out from the pivot. The lifting lever is straight or nearly straight and LL2 seems the closest for that.
With that decided, now I have to figure out how to model the air hose bracket on the end of the car ;)

Thanks, for the great feedback. These are interesting conversions of the prototype. Often such conversions were done for a specific Rock Island customer, is that the case for these cars (i.e. would they ever be found off-line)?

Bruce, Did not any of those YMW levers work for this car? I have this kit but haven't started it yet. Curt Fortenberry PS: Still tentative but I might be in Auburn the 2nd week of October. I have a couple of work trips stateside a week apart so I'm thinking of visiting my folks in Spanish Fort and I haven't been to the alma mater in a couple decades. |

Re: Rock Island Bulk Flour Box Cars 47000 series
RI 47000-47020 were converted for bulk flour service by the
railroad in 1956 by locating two round hatches on raised squares one on either
side of the running board and either side of the car center line. A shield
shaped hatch was added in the lower left corner of either side and the car was
completely lined with plywood (sides, ends and ceiling) attached to the side
posts, etc, in lieu of the old wood lining. This was then coated with a
polyester sealer applied over fiber glass netting. The original cars came
from the 145000-145999 series, 10'6" inside height boxcars built by Pressed
Steel Car company in 1940.
I attach Rock Island photos from the rebuilding project before
repainting.
Twenty more cars were done in 1957 and 1957 extending the
series to 47040. These cars used 1/4 inch thick MET-L WOOD faced with
0.020 aluminum applied over the original lining.
Ross Dando made a run of resin castings some years ago to
provide these roof hatches and unloading doors. You can contact him to get
a set at twinstarcars at yahoo dot com. Please don't reply to the
listing. He won't see it.

If you model the right period of time, you might see these cars on a flour mill loading (shipping) siding along with a few Airslides and boxcars for bagged flour. Only hard part about the conversion might be the stenciling. Ron Merrick |

I've never heard of a dome with a side vent (No doubt here comes the lesson!). Do you mean an "L" or "Y" shaped vent on the dome facing the car end? If so, yes, they were common on cars built up into the early 1920s or so. See my Album #1, WP Tank Cars in our photo section to see what I mean. If this is what you mean, F&C makes AC&F 8K tanks with these vents in both high and low-walkway models. Many of these tanks were still in use until after WWII, and in MW service into the 1980s.
