Nope: 22000-22349, and 22350-22499 (with end doors). All-steel boxcars built by Standard Steel in 1929. These were the first all-steel freight cars bought new by the NKP, and are vaguely similar to 1932 ARA boxcars.

Tim,

I think if you look at the far right, you can discern sheathing boards. Also, the stencil on the door that is cut off on the upper edge of the photo looks to be "T&P" making it a T&P auto car, I believe built by Pressed Steel in 1929.

Cheers,

Mike,

Nope.  Absolutely not the case here.  The star for messenger equipped cars was adopted in 1948.  The photo was taken in 1936 of an AUTOMOBILE boxcar.  I am not aware of any boxcar, ever, equipped with auto loaders (the horizontal white stripe on the door) and messenger service (desk and toilet).

On many roads a star on the door or near the number on a baggage or express car would signify that the car was equipped for a messenger, and that someone may be on board.  We don't know the story behind this photo, but if the car was intended to carry any of those people in a passenger train (one does have a bed roll), that may be the case here. There is a camp car nearby.

On the Lackawanna steel cabooses a star near the number denoted a flush toilet. Might convey the same message, after all.

The car appears to have steel side sheathing. The Southern Pacific
had single sheathed auto box cars built with steel sheathing, such as
the 50 foot A-50-10. But the posts and diagonals are closer together
than on that SP car, so I wonder if this is a 40 foot car.

Bob,

I believe that the stars are a notation as to the type of automobile rack in the car. These marking usually denote the type of loader, the clearance and the number of floor tubes, but it is my understanding that custom markings could be used… and given the photo is relatively early in tthe auto rack era it may be before the general rules were created.

I love the script "autos" on the door… but I can't tell if it is a stencil or a challk mark.

Each Airbrusher will have an experienced Coach to offer advice and assistance as they paint. Four people will be painting at any one time. If there are slots open when we begin, feel free to sign up in one of the open slots. We will be using Badger Airbrushes and their Modelflex Acrylic paint.

FLAT CAR HAND BRAKE QUESTION

WILLIAM PARDIE

Does anyone have any information on the mechanics of the drop shaft handbrakes used on flat cars?
MY 1943 Car Builders Cyclopedia shows the front portion of his devise but I am curious as to how
the chain couples to this. Is ther a second geared shaft behind the main shaft that is geared and wraps
up the chain? The front photos do not sem to leave much room for wrapping the chain on th shaft.

As usual thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Problems With Messages

How much can be answered (I own www.elvastower.com, a forum for train simming).  There are plenty of reasonably prices hosting services out there.  Bandwidth is inexpensive.  What tends to drive costs these days is using up a lot of disk space.  That’s a problem for sites that have a lot of downloadable content and/or a decade or more of lots of posts (with pictures).  But even with a lot of disk a membership the size of STMFC would have no trouble paying for a domain, board software, and hosting via a $0.30/year per member fee.  Maybe less.  Make it a $1/year and you can accumulate some money as a safety net for future unexpected expenses. Or if an annual membership fee is unacceptable then $5, $10, or $20 annual donations from a much smaller number of persons would serve just as well – IOW a low amount from lots of donators or a higher amount from far fewer.

The difficult-to-cover expense is with administrators.  Mike and Jeff handle an e-mail list well enough… running a board takes more time.  You need one or more persons w/ technical skills to apply security patches and do board upgrades. You need a handful of people who can work together to keep things organized – by that I mean to relocate posts put into the wrong forum, to split threads when thread drift gets out of hand, to add or delete forums as you conclude there is a better way to structure things.  It’s not that a lot of time is required all of the time but when something needs to be dealt with it’ll probably take more time than with an  e-mail list.

As for what’s different, board software handles attachments much better so it becomes standard for photos to come along with posts.  Board software handles threads better (what Yahoo calls topics), and board software gives you any number of forums so if you wanted forums by car type you can do that, if you wanted forums for semi-tangential topics, like track, you can do that too.

The alternative is for the group to provide (pay for) it's own web hosting servers by some other private or contracted provider.   There has to be some certainty that as the need to account for the cost of providing the Yahoo groups feature is measured against the revenue return is weighed, somebody is going to pay.    The "when & how much" can't be answered by anybody just yet.

Hi Kevin and List Members,

In that case it is series NYC 499025-499029. Note that car 499027 is NOT a 90-ton car as you had specified in your original query.

There is a diagram at the link below.

I have no images of this specific series.

You may need to nail down the exact number series you are asking about, or perhaps nail down the time frame. Have you checked in an appropriate era ORER to get the full number series?

Been looking for a photo of this series with no luck. I'm building a Third Rail Graphics model for a friend. I've looked on line, in the Morning Sun color guide, and so on.

The N&W listing in the October 1965 ORER (I know, after this list's cutoff) says the series are "all steel, Z-bar" 40-foot boxcars with 10'0" inside height and 12'0" door openings. Not sure what is so special about Z-bar that it needs to be called out in the listing. Are these rebuilds of single-sheath boxcars?

Scott,
NKP 22000-22349 were built by Standard Steel Car Co. in 1929. The SSC builder photo obtained from Keith Retterer many years ago of NKP 22249 has a 10-29 build date. NKP 22350-22499 were the same except with end doors.

The prototype cars were all-steel with 10'-0" IH, 12' clear door openings, sides with 3 panels to the left of the staggered door and 5 panels to the right, 3-section Dreadnaught ends (the "recessed type" with the seams across the corrugations, and Murphy flat-panel roof with Z-U eaves. Specialties included Youngstown doors, Peacock (22000-22249) and Ureco (22250-2234) hand brakes, and A.R.A. spring-plank trucks. Hope this helps.

Marty,

Fear not.  As this issue arose, I archived the entirety of STMFC (and Shake-N-Take) using PG Offline (the same program Doug Harding mentioned).  It took about 4 days because Yahoo doesn’t let you grab it all at once.  I have all of the messages (current through July 30, 2016), Files, and Photos.  That archive is backed-up, and a copy will soon be shipped away from earthquake-prone California (where I live) to hurricane-prone Florida (where Mike lives).

We have also been investigating other similar places that can host STMFC.  There are even ways to upload our archive of old messages, files and photos so that it will appear we’ve “been there the whole time”.  I have no intention of moving STMFC until Yahoo (or its successor) kicks us out.

Wouldn't surprise me if Yahoo pulled the plugs on groups entirely. And I suspect if it happens it will be with little, if any, warning.

If that did happen, I'm sure we'd all find one another eventually. The larger concern is what would happen to the tremendous repository of knowledge that's been collectively built up over the 14+ years this group has been active.

A while back we had some discussion that asked (I'm paraphrasing) -

"What would replace STMFC Yahoo group as a community platform?" and

"What would happen to the information currently on STMFC if Yahoo groups went away?"

As I recall, our esteemed administrator decided such a discussion, limited specifically to STMFC and not Yahoo in general, was within scope for STMFC -

But I'm not sure if we ever came up with any answers.
