Re: B&O and PRR Sentinel/Merchandise Serrvice box cars

Greg Kennelly asked:
"As these photographs are one to two years after my modelling period, my question to the B&O and PRR experts is: What is the earliest date
cars from these specialized services were re-assigned to the general box car pool and would, therefore, possibly be seen as far afield as
Southwestern British Columbia?"

Your X29 is a bit of a cuckoo, as these cars (NOT to be confused with the specially equipped Class X29B rebuilds in the Merchandise Service paint scheme) lacked special LCL handling equipment and were plain boxcars with a fancy paint scheme. Also, keep in mind that far more ordinary boxcars were used in LCL service than cars painted in schemes advertising the service.

Bottom line - this X29 wasn't specifically assigned to LCL service. It probably handled LCL at some point, but as any other clean general service boxcar would have.

B&O 466292 in the Sentinel Service paint scheme was photographed by Walter E Frost in Vancouver, BC, on June 13, 1954 (re-weighed and repacked at WA in 9-53)
http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/b-o-baltimore-and-ohio-railway-co-box-car-466292
and was also photographed by Hubert E Mills at Squamish, BC within a few days of Walter’s photo.

PRR X29 # 52569 in the Merchandise Service scheme was photographed by Walter E. Frost in Vancouver on October 4, 1953 (re-weighed at P129 in 3-50 and repacked 4-5-53 at what looks like “WSC”).
http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/pennsylvania-box-car-52569
Another PRR Merchandise Service X29, 505797 (re-weighed at P129 1-53, repack stencil not readable in the photo), was photographed by William H. Hewlett at Squamish, BC in August 1954.

As these photographs are one to two years after my modelling period, my question to the B&O and PRR experts is: What is the earliest date cars from these specialized services were re-assigned to the general box car pool and would, therefore, possibly be seen as far afield as Southwestern British Columbia?

In the 1950s, it was a common practice for the CPR to send empty US box cars at Vancouver to the PGE in Squamish for lumber loading to US destinations.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

The ICC valuations were an effort to determine what the total capital value of each railroad was (to set fair rates of return). That project essentially failed, but the reports are superb snapshots of the railroads in the 'teens. All rolling stock is listed, with brief descriptions, and a value assigned to each class of car, or group of cars, or even individual pieces of equipment. These are not always accurate (I know of one report in which all equipment built before 1900 is shown as built in 1895, regardless of actual date), and sometimes other details are garbled, but generally the reports, now in US government archives, are most informative.

Apparently no question about that. Checked the valuation report which has the following:

3 at Richmond 1901
9 at Huntington 1902
1 at Huntington 1905
20 at Huntington in 1907
1 at Huntington in 1907
1 at Covington 1907

Thanks Eric!  My gut feeling is some may have made in their own shops or possibly the HV Logan shops (only steel side-sills for mounting axles/journal pedestals).  No equipment trusts for "cabeese" until 1924.

Do you know if anyone other than ACF Huntington and Jeffersonville (total 108 purchased in lots of 12 to 25) supplied the C&O with August 9, 1901 style 4-wheel cabooses between 1901 and 1908?

I would appreciate shots of the B7a  or bits of a B7a, shown close up.

I think in the previous thread there was mention of one or two which still existed.

There's a shot of an A&D B7a in hide service on the dreaded 'bay at the moment.

Thanks to the NWHS for putting this kind of information in the public domain.  You have to assume they are serious about their history.  It's a pity this kind of thing is an exception.

Updated SHAKE N TAKE list with the Alternates LAST CALL

Greg Martin

Hey Yuze Gize,

Here is the roster of those that made the sign up for 2015 SHAKE N TAKE presentation. Remember this list is for those that intend to make the event and are willing to build the model. If for any reason things change and you wish to deleted form this list email me separately. If you want to be considered as an alternate email me directly.

A quick note to those who plan to be in Cocoa Beach and are on the SHAKE N TAKE list, please make your room reservations early like this week as a group effort I would like to show that we are dedicated and respect Mike's concerns. Also if you can pre-register and keep Scott Dam a happy man.

Also I would like to take up to ten (or more) alternates as you can see things change. New faces from the lurking crowd is always a good thing. Please Remember Alternates are just that Alternates.

  1. Craig Zeni
  2. Scott Dam
  3. John Greedy
  4. Richard Berry
  5. John Cantlay
  6. Gene Semon
  7. Ted Culotta
  8. Al Brown
  9. Dave Sieber
  10. Paul Bizier
  11. Schuyler Larrabee
  12. Arved Grass
  13. George Corral
  14. Armend Premo
  15. Mike Brock
  16. Steve Orth
  17. Andy Carlson
  18. John Barry
  19. Tony Thompson
  20. Larry Sexton
  21. Roger Hinman
  22. Bill Welch
I will now entertain the list for...

First Alternates:
  1. Mike Smeltzer
  2. Jeff Aley
  3. Ed Martin
  4. Chuck Davis
  5. Bruce Borgeson
  6. Roger Wilson
  7. Henry Horn
Greg Martin

Eventually all things merge into one and a river runs through it.

Slag pot flatcar load.

Brian Carlson

I picked up a nice resin slag pot from Bob Forsythe out of Dyer IN. The instructions talk about mounting it on a modern TTX or NS 60 ft.  As a 1957 modeler, I assume any 70 ton flat car would work? Anyone, point me to photos of similar loads in the steam era.

Dennis,

I much appreciate the correction and elaboration... and I, for one, thank you very much for having made these!  I have installed your gear boxes (with Sergent couplers to boot) on as many of my models as I can easily make them fit on, and will continue to do so in the future.  It is THE standard for my collection, and there is no other option for narrow draft gear boxes or couplers for me.

They are a collaboration between Frank Sergent and myself. With the PROTO:HO Accumate, I set out to design a coupler compatible with the common HO scale magnetic couplers that would mount within the confines of a scale width center sill, and yeild a scale striker-to-striker distance between coupled cars. Frank set out to produce a reliable operating scale model of the AAR Type E coupler, initially grafting it to a shank that fit the common oversize box. In discussions, we came to realize that there was no reason why the Sergent coupler could not also be adapted to the near scale size box. Since Accurail had already tooled the box, we committed to supply them if Frank would tool his coupler with a shank to fit. We both see this interchangeability as a win for the RPM portion of the hobby in general.

Kadee seems to be hung up on their traditional striker to pivot dimension. This appears to be a throw-back to their magnetic delayed uncoupling system, which, quite frankly, I see used very little these days. To get adequate swing for typical model curves, Kadee is forced to put a strange funnel shaped opening on their narrow boxes.

I was familiar with prototype couplers that pivot very much closer to the coupler head, specifically the pilot couplers on steam locos that are pined right behind the head and function well enough. I decided that the important criteria was the width of the box, and moved the pivot outward to a point where it would function on our curves, Giving the box detailing that appears to be a continuation of the center sill, as it should be. A beneficial side effect is this moves the mounting screw from the traditional position, so our 0-80 screw is positioned where there is meat to tap a new thread, rather than falling in the same location as the existing 2-56 threaded hole.

This design has no detrimental effect on the Sergent system, and they have adopted our mounting dimensions for their "scale width" couplers.
