the tall steps like in the photo. But I've never seen a photo of a Type X that was converted from a single dome, so this would be the first. Maybe there's a better shot of the car in the collection? It was not unusual for older tanks to be converted in the '30s and '40s to handle specialized commodities in small quantities. |

Re: a Type X tank car modified to a 3 dome tank car?
I think that I can see the characteristic square UTLX safety placard holder on the end of the car behind the tender, so, I agree that it is an X-3 car.

The Richard Hendrickson photo collection contains photos of GATX cars exactly like the rear tank car in that photo. Not saying it's not UTLX, just saying it could be other things too.

Re: a Type X tank car modified to a 3 dome tank car?
I already had that photo on my hard drive and I agree with Tony, it struck me as a GATC tank car. I have over a dozen shots of UTLX 3-dome tank cars and this is the only one that looks remotely like this one. All of the others have more conventional UTLX style end platforms. The other one was built (or rebuilt) as a 3-dome car. Might be an X-3. David Thompson |

Re: N&W B7a boxcars - other owners?
James F. Brewer <jfbrewer@...>
Both of these cars would be excellent kit conversions to be offered by a purveyor of resin parts/kits. They are basically ten panel side bodies applied on the underframes of the donor cars; the only "part" not readily available are the ends, which could be offered in resin. Decals would also be needed as well.
The N&W B7 and B7a were rebuilt from its BS class and variations thereof (BSa, BSb); the B7 had an interior height of 10' 0" and a Viking Roof:
B7
The B7a had an interior height of 10' 6" and either a Murphy panel roof or diagonal panel roof (I need to locate my N&W roof data sheet).
B7a
I hope this information helps.

N&W drawing shows a rectangular-panel roof, though that was right around the time of the transition to diagonal panels.
