According to the MKT Freight Equipment Folio No. 41, page 8. The 79001-79157 single sheathed boxcars built in 1943 at the Denison Texas car shops are rebuilds from the GARX 52001-52200 refrigerators. From what I have been able to determine the lease of these cars would have been terminated sometime in 1943 when the cars were purchased for conversion. Regards to all, Tom Palmer From: STMFC@... Tom, there may be Katy modelers out there who can answer this question for certain, but it's my understanding that this lease agreement was interrupted by World War II and was not renewed after the war. Unfortunately, General American's ORER entries provide no enlightenment. I have several photos of these cars but they date from the late '30s/early '40s, with the most recent having been taken in 1941. Richard Hendrickson

Paul, I have several dozen of the bronze leaf spring sets left over from our kits (The Car Shop). I'll certainly never use them all and I will be glad to send you what you need for your project.
Also, the Central Valley archbar trucks, part No T-53, are 5' wheelbase and these springs should fit them correctly. Dave Lawler

Paul, the leaf springs are available on the PSC site. Look under Misc-Springs, item #31968.

As I recall, the Central Valley archbar trucks were 5', and their helical springs could be replaced by the stamped leaf springs made by Silver Streak. The latter may still available from Ye Olde Huff N' Puff. Good looking combination.

Group,
Anyone familiar with these old Walthers arch-bar, spring-leaf trucks being
sold on eBay, as to journal-spacing and side-frame design?

Chuck,
Thanks for the lead to PSC. Went there and didn't see any individual
leaf-springs but there are arch-bar leaf-spring type trucks, but, again, no
journal-spacings. Would have to contact them about that.
Kadee doesn't state their journal-spacings either, but after receiving
their #583's they are 5'-6".

PSC still sells separate leaf springs. Is Kadee arch bar not 5'0"?

Jack,
What a great find and such a fast response to my query. I bought them off
eBay. Now if I can just find somemore, or at least the bronze leafs.
Thanks a bunch,

GARX Reefers
I am trying to track a group of Rock Island reefers that were built by GAT in 1924 and then sold to and leased back from General American in the Depression - GARX (formerly RI) 67750 – 67999. Does anyone have the appropriate pages from ORER’s between 1948 and 1952 that they could share with me? The RI purchased 16 back for ice service in the early 50’s, but I wonder what happened to the rest.
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year.
Looking forward to PR 2014.
