Harbor Freight might be cheaper than Chicago Air Brush Supply but I can never find what I'm looking for at Harbor Freight! I've only purchase a few things there (and there is a store a couple miles from my house) and only after checking online to ensure that they stock what I'm looking for. But, EVERY time, I need to ask a worker there where I can find what I've come to buy. (And there aren't many stockers around to ask.) They tell me the aisle number but I still can't find what I'm looking for even when I scour the shelves in that aisle from the floor to the ceiling. So....you want me to find a set of steel brushes which only measure 4" overall? I'll pay several bucks more to buy them online.
When I have a problem with an air brush, I go online to a place that sells air brushes. An e-mail to the company I referenced confirmed that one of those brushes was smaller than the needle on my air brush. I'm not a "shopper" so I don't get an answer from a website and then look for a cheaper place to purchase their suggestion. I'm just pleased that they confirmed that the product they had in stock would solve my problem.
Unlike my favorite hardware store or hobby shop, I don't go to Harbor Freight looking for something I might want...

Intermountain PFE R-40-25 question

I have an Intermountain Pacific Fruit Express R-40-25 reefer with mixed lettering features. The side lettering has UP/SP black heralds on the right (1954 per Hartey RPM handout), yet an aluminum roof with black ends (introduced 1962).
Is this an Intermountain foobie or a reasonable hybrid?

CNJ did a lot of end replacements with both Murphy
and Hutchins end. The series you mean with a steel framed end is 17000-17499
built by ACF in 1916. The diagrams have a note "Hutchins Dry Lading roof applied
for repairs." The original roof was "Chicago Common Sense. 17000-17499 also
built by ACF in 1916, but apparently Hutchins all steel roof was original on
these. There is no indication than any of these had their ends replaced, however
CNJ had some other orders of single sheathed box cars that were built with steel
ends. The 1919 CBD has a photo of 17239.

You don't want stainless, but I use stainless from Ngineering for many lighting projects. The tubing has an ID of .012" I cut it with a disk on a Dremel and debut it with a #80 drill.

Can anyone lead me to a good photo of a car with a sinlge sheathed end? Anyone have solid data regarding the roofs? Underframes? (was it a fishbelly like the Accurail cars or the Tichy flat car)?
With the abundance of photos of cars with Murphy ends is it possible that the single sheathed ended cars were rebuilt with replacement steel ends?

Steve, Be aware that the craft store 'pipe cleaners' aren't really pipe cleaners. They use longer synthetic non-absorbent fibers, and the number of fibers per unit length is much fewer than those use in true pipe cleaners. I've found the fibers pull loose and stay behind, possibly resulting in clogging. The wires are more exposed, which could scratch the channels of precision air brushes. After a brief flirtation with them, I dumped them ib favor of true pipe cleaners. Nelson Moyer
