Thank you very much for sharing this work and I very much appreciate the added notations about models of the cars! It really provides a view of how diverse rolling stock moving on the NYC was.

This has to be the first consist with a PLE car hauling coconuts posted and it was bound for Kankakee, no less.

old Westerfield kits on Ebay

Al and Patricia Westerfield <westerfield@...>

Patricia likes to troll EBay occasionally to see if prices for our kits are increasing now that we're no longer taking orders. Most of the ones offered now are made from the old, fragile material. I've contacted all of the sellers to suggest that the descriptions be amended to warn potential bidder. I've said this before but it bears repeating: 1) if the end label says Elk Grove Village its old resin; 2) if the kit number is above 3702 it's new resin; and 3) if the number is 3702 and below and the kit box lacks the Westerfield logo it is probably old resin. Caveat emptor. - Al Westerfield

Re: covered gondola help

Larry Kline

Maybe we should change the subject line here but i haven't.

Responding to Chuck Yungkurth's and other earlier posts, the PRR called the "erection drawing" the "general arrangement" drawing. The freight car general arrangement drawings that I have do not include any brake system information. The PRR microfilmed these drawings and they are available for numerous car classes from the PRRT&HS See:
http://www.prrths.com/Lewistown%20Archives/PRR_Microfilm.html
A list of the available freight car general arrangement drawings can be found at:
http://www.prrths.com/Lewistown%20Archives/02%20Frt%20Car%20Gen%20Arrt,%20Rev.%202006-02-07.pdf

There were also PRR "brake arrangement" drawings for the car classes. If a car was built before AB brakes were adopted there are (at least) two brake arrangement drawigs a K or KD drawing and an AB drawing that superseded the K or KD drawing. The numbers for the brake arrangement drawings, and the many other drawings for a specific car class can be found on the list of tracings for each car class. See:
http://www.prrths.com/Lewistown%20Archives/01%20Microfilm%20Drawing%20Ordering%20Information%20Rev.%202006-02-07.pdf

All of the PRR freight car "brake arrangement" drawings the I have show a top view looking at the brake system from above, a side view below the top view, and various other views which differ from car to car. The other views sometimes show hand brake arrangements and/or other brake arrangement details.

I have a few WM hopper car general arrangement and brake arrangement drawings that are similar in content to the PRR drawings.

Hmm. I have a photo of late Huntington-era cars being
assembled with underframes upside down--that would be 1902--so
although I don't disagree that if you go back far enough, they were
built right-side-up, we have to be careful what is meant by "back far
enough." My guess would be that for most of the 20th century, well-
equipped and/or progressive railroad shops (if not all shops)
assembled underframes upside down. It ain't just modelers <g>.

Tony Thompson
I don't disagree. But, consider this... At some point how things are drawn becomes the "drawing convention"... once that happens, the drawings are divorced from the actual fabrication process, because "everyone knows" that the drawings show 'em right side up, even though we build 'em up-side down. The same thing has happened with the standard North American third angle projection. The Europeans did it differently, but nobody cared, it was just assumed if it was an American Drawing from an American firm, it was third angle projection. Now, there are little ISO symbols to be included in the title blocks so the Chinese know what you mean, since they deal with both.

Maybe some day I should add them to my title blocks? Naw, let 'em guess.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the tip. I've checked out the order form photos on the web and there look to be some possiblities here. Now I have to dig out my equipment diagrams and reference photos.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the response - it's never too late.
Re: BOX SCALE, Urban Legend, etc - let's keep in mind that Uncle Irv got underbody equipment completely reversed in the molded part. I'm game to believe just about anything as to why the covered gon is less than 52'. I figure there's a 50:50 chance that Irv's response to the first modeler to point out the car is short was; "It is?!?!?"

I'm not sure how common the Bethlehem Steel Company version of the prototype was. The Athearn version will be my stand-in model until a correct commercial car is available or I clear a mess of projects off my plate to at least build some correct length sides.
