There are at least 2 sites that are trying to list all of the meets. However this only works if meeting organizers send information about their meets to the web sites. Neither of the sites below is complete or up to date.

The protomeets Yahoo group which is intended especially for meet organizers:

and Joe D'Elia's Naperville site which has two lists of meets.

Perhaps the lesson can be returned in kind. Surely there's a local web site for
reviewing restaurants. If everyone who was there last week made a "contribution" there
could at least be some sense of justice.

I got the feeling from the moment we arrived that they didn't really want us there in

It's tough to find a restaurant that can handle a large group and both do a good job
with the group AND not screw their regular customers who have the misfortune to be there
at the same time. We walked out of one of our favorite places back last year, after
waiting an hour with no food. Waitress blamed kitchen, hostess blamed large group, I
blamed owner. Owner blamed waitress, but admitted that even after 25 years in business,
they just can't predict what a large group will do to the kitchen. We've been back. I
mainly just wanted to know what night of the week to avoid.

for the as-built car, which also should have the large NYC & STL reporting marks?

Oops! I just noticed/realized that the number series noted in the RPC article aren't all filled. For example, there were only two of the subject cars originally placed in the GARX 1300-1349. Not 50. When I looked in the ORER for a particular number series, I counted ALL the existing cars in that series, not just the ones that dimensionally fit.

My error is based on the far more common event of having a railroad order cars and have them fill a complete number series. That approach, as is demonstrated in today's example, isn't absolutely required. Not for private owners, and not for railroads, even.

So, double oops and my apologies for my error.

Re: IMWX / DPH NKP Box Car - Viking Roof

Hi Andy,

The museum at North Judson, IN, has two of these cars preserved: NKP 15797, still in original NKP paint (including black ends, and an odd door lower sill reinforcement tab), and NKP 15979 in a faded N&W hamburger scheme (MOW) with the NKP lettering peeking through. I can't tell if the roofs are original or replacements though; that will require a trip to the museum in the spring!

If you'd like 'em, I can pass along photos offlist.

Looking for an easy project that I
can actually use, I dug out a kit I
bought quite a few years ago from Des Plaines Hobbies.....
the 1937 AAR box
car with Viking roof.  Of course the next thing I did
was try and find a
prototype photo.  Not a lot out there. These cars
apparently lasted into
the 1970s and even though assigned N&W numbers, doesn't
look like many ever
got them.

In the Kincaid / Morning Sun book on page 64, there is a
picture dated 1962
of a box car that is a dead match for my DPH kit, except...
it doesn't
appear to have a Viking roof.   I looked up
a few old STMFC discussions in
my archives and found this:
http://www.steamfreightcars.com/prototype/frtcars/1937aarpdfmain.html
Which would indicate that the entire batch of NKP box cars
15000-15499 had
Viking roofs.   Other than the lettering -
the car is a match for the photo
except for the roof.

Also I guess some "AAR 1937" box cars were build in
1936.  Interesting.

Anyway, odds are if I were to forward date the 1962 car to
1975, it would
still be in the same paint but with more rust and grime, an
ACI label, and
a few other reporting mark changes.

Can anyone confirm if all of the cars in this batch did
indeed have Viking
roofs?  The model is #15366, the photo in the book is
#15330.  Also the car
in the photo has a steel running board - which could have
been replaced,
and the doors look like the Youngstown 6' doors that come
with the model,
but have two larger ribs.

I don't know the terminology... just testing my powers of
observation.  The
basic car, ends, even the sill is a match.  The model
has polling pockets,
the prototype does not.  Of course it would be really
nice to have a 1970s
photo of one of these cars to go by.  But TBQH, if I'm
going to have to
repaint the car anyway, I may as well just find an undec
RC/IMWX kit and
start from scratch.  But I need to definitely confirm
the roof, as well as
figure out what type of doors I will need.

I'm a 70s modeler but I need lots and lots of steam era box
cars, in
particular N&W, Wabash, and Nickel Plate
cars.   Hopefully someone has a
copy of the Kincaid book and can take a look and check my
vision.  Freight
cars often take just as much research as a diesel, and
prototype photos are
a lot harder to come by it seems.  Any thoughts,
comments, corrections,
suggestions?

Andy

Photos of the LCIX cars have often appeared in Cyclopedias and Railway Age over the years but I do not recall anything describing how they were set up internally. From previous efforts in determining actual color from black & white photos, particularly with the earliest delivery of B&M E-7's (sorry Mike), it would seem the the most likely color would be something close to the silver tone of aluminum. In other words silver but lacking in reflective quality like a flat paint.

A guess would be Liquid Carbonic, and the second builder's photo on the page
clearly shows a build date of 1935. I think LC was shipped in cylinders, but
someone else may have more accurate information.

It does appear to be diagonal panel.

And one of the photo dealers offers NKP 18399, a spruced-up Steam Era car in a new number series from the mid-1960s, with a replacement diagonal panel roof.
As long as it's in revenue service into the mid 1970s, I can justify it. I rarely shot photos of freight cars on their own back then, but when they show up in my photos there are a tremendous number of steam era cars in 1950s or earlier schemes, still with full ladders and running boards and solid bearing trucks. Including a few surprises... IM did a P-S double door car with a 1959 build date, and I thought it was too early of a paint scheme, but I found one of my own photos that contained that exact car. So I can use it - as well as the nice Kadee car of the same prototype, although it's going to lose its "collector" appeal once I get done with the weathering :-)

My 1967 ORER lists only 7 cars in that range listed under the N&W numbers 21500-21599. My 1974 ORER shows... drum roll... one car.

Oh well, maybe I will just build it as a steam era car. Plenty more NKP 40' box cars to do that did last well into the 70s.

The book does say 8 cars remained in NKP marks until 1979, but not sure how to go about finding them in the ORER. Or rather, I forgot. I know I was looking up pre-merger cars before... airslides, PS-2 4000s, and other covered hoppers.

Interesting that the book photo really doesn't look like a Viking roof - at least not the same type as the DPH kit comes with. But above it are the 13200-13499 class of P-S built cars, and the car in that photo definitely has a Viking roof.
