SOUTHERN Stock Car Drawings

Allen Cain <allencain@...>

Does anyone have detailed drawings of Southern's 40 ft stock cars that would
have been in service in the early 1950s? I have Southern's diagram 30-F-13
but this does not have much detail. These were in series 45200-45649 and
45650-46002. I am considering a scratch build project after reviewing the
article on building these cars that was published by Model Railroader in
April, 1957 but neither this article or the Southern diagram 30-F-13 has
enough detail to work from with any great degree of accuracy. Any help
would be appreciated and can be sent to me off-list at allencain@...
or post comments on list to get a dialog going.

I considered trying to kitbash a P2K stock car but the outside bracing is
wrong. However, with more details I might still go this route. Has anyone
attempted this with any success?

C'mon. David is correct. The sun is nearly straight overhead and is therefore castings unusually long shadows under the thin overlap of roof on end.

David

I suppose it's possible, if whoever scanned the photo "oversharpened" it,
they may have distorted the image by overemphasis on the contrast where the
end and roof join. Still, absent any other information, I'll just not make
up my mind yet one way or the other.

Tim O'Connor

Naah, it's a visual trick resulting from the really high contrast level in that photo. If the end actually was recessed, the rounded ends of the darts would be hidden by the vertical rivet strip on the corner.

David, look at it more closely, blow it up if you have the most recent IE,
in the lower right corner you can select the percentage of the view,
enlarging it up to 400% of original size. If you do that, you can see that
the rounded ends of the darts are far too close to the vertical rivet strip
to be credibly on a flat plane that hits the outboard edge of that rivet
strip.

As Tim O'C noted, the two ends are not built the same way.

There is a 1950's Virl Davis photo of SLSF 128436 in Model
Railroading,
June 1988, p. 17. The SLSF car had 5/5/5 ends, and when originally
rebuilt
had "grabiron ladders" on the corner, which were replaced with real
ladders
later (e.g. as seen in the above photo). But the car kept its original
roof
as Ben says, and also kept its Andrews trucks.

There's a late 1940's shot of SLSF 129529 in Railroad Model Craftsman,
September 1989, p. 56. This one really shows the B end beautifully,
and
this car has an earlier paint scheme, and the original "ladders".

Ben, or someone else a while back, posted a composite photo of SLSF
129534
with two shots of an Atlas 8-panel model. So those are three SLSF cars
that
can be modeled with the Atlas 8-panel car -- but someone says these
only
exist in N scale? From the composite photo I can't tell the scale of
the
model.

Tim O'Connor
Since, we are discussing USRA re-built boxcars there is a duplicate
slide on eBay of an apparently very freshly painted PRR X26c. To bad the
photographer didn't get the entire car. The caption reads "
Pennsylvania Railroad Boxcar #106394 in Peoria, Illinois on March 19,
1956" .

While the URL given is, in fact, correct, I found that I could not get there directly. I had to use the following indirect route:

Go tohttp://www.trainweb.org

Scroll down and select "Featured Trainweb.org websites"
Select "Trainweb.org/oldtimetrains - Old Time Trains"
Select "Articles"
Scroll down to "CPR Miscellaneous" and select "Chalk it Up!"

Now, a question:

Can anyone on the list offer suggestions regarding the origin of the PGE car shown in the photograph, please?

The car is one of three, PGE 804 - 806, acquired second-hand by the railway in 1938. Stencilling visible in other photographs from the 1940s indicates that the cars were built in March, 1902 and had a Cubic Capacity of 1648 CU. FT., with an I.L of 29'-0", and I.W. of 8'-5" and an I.H. of 6'-9". Any help identifying their origin would be greatly appreciated.

In 1945, B&O began to specify bright red oxide commercial paints for

The best paint for this B&O bright red oxide is Scalecoat Oxide Red

Bob,
You are correct. According to the paint sample for the M-58A 50'
box
cars built by AC&F in 10-47, the cars received Pittsburgh
Synthetic
paint (an oxide shade). So the switch from brown to oxide red
occurred sometime between 12-41, when the M-55A/B box cars that
received "Alkali Resisting Brown" were built, and 10-47. This
oxide
shade was similar to that used by ACL, CNW, L&N, UP and others
during
the postwar years.

A portion of the M-60 and M-61 50' box cars built in 1951
received an
even lighter-brighter shade of oxide red, much like the color
Western
Maryland used during the 1950s, while the balance received the
same
oxide shade as the M-58A cars.

Ed Hawkins

paint (an oxide shade). So the switch from brown to oxide red
occurred sometime between 12-41, when the M-55A/B box cars that
received "Alkali Resisting Brown" were built, and 10-47. This oxide
shade was similar to that used by ACL, CNW, L&N, UP and others during
the postwar years.

A portion of the M-60 and M-61 50' box cars built in 1951 received an
even lighter-brighter shade of oxide red, much like the color Western
Maryland used during the 1950s, while the balance received the same
oxide shade as the M-58A cars.

Ed Hawkins

Actually, it looks sort of like the corners of the ends and sides are
flanged, like the sides are long enough to run past the plane of the end,
much like the roof does. Is that correct? You can't see the far corner
because of the ladder's stile.

Thanks, Charlie, for the photos link! :-)

What is the "thing" to the left of the bolster, under the sill?

Also, there is something very peculiar about the roof on this
car -- Notice how there is a very slight 'overhang' where the end
and roof meet. I've never seen that before on any 1937 AAR box car.

Re: Latest Im release of their Wood-Sheathed reefer

Bill Welch

Dear Gene:

The paint schemes appear to be correct, although I could not tell in the cars with the later Gothic lettering have silver roofs.

Bill,
You wrote, and I quote, "Two friends have asked me to comment to comment on the accuracy of the paint and stenciling schemes for the latest release of InterMountain's wood sheathed FGE/WFE reefer post war rebuild models."

You, and others, went on to discuss the InterMountain car itself and its fidelity or lack of fidelity to the prototype but, although I believe I followed the discussion quite closely, the accuracy of the paint and stenciling schemes except for a comment about an incorrect car number.

Will you please comment on the accuracy of the paint and stenciling schemes? Or are the cars simply too bogus to permit a comment?

Keith Rettier Castings

Does Keith Rettier still make the Creco doors and Deco ends for the 1937 C&O Box Cars? And if so, how do I contact him?

Thanks,
