Hi Claus,
This is Ma & Pa X-11, not X-41. X-11 was built in 1927 as NJI&I 78103. The Ma & Pa received it in 1956 and kept it on the roster until 1983. It still exists at the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society in Muddy Creek Forks, Pa. The NJI&I reporting marks are still legible on the interior of the car. I believe this may actually be SP 615200 a B-70-18. It was a one car class built by Whitehead and Kales in 1963 and was the fore-runner of SPs 86’ Hy Cube cars. A bit of a rarity. http://www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/box/b070-18.htm

Looking for O Scale Intermountain Reefer Kit instructions

I just had a friend call me and he has been given an Intermountain O Scale reefer kit to assemble. It is factory painted BREX. The kit has no instruction sheet(s). Does anyone have any of these reefer kits so that they could scan and send me the instructions? I can then print them out for him.

The IR did so some interchange with the Monon south of Greencastle where its cars would be given to the Monon for delivery to the very nearby cement works. These cars would be immediately returned to the IR for delivery to some customer on its system. There is a photo of this on page 51 in the IR book by Bradley.

Claus, Doubtful, and certainly not by the date of this photo. It lacks proper lettering required for interchange. It also lacks an air brake hose, and no retainer valve and pipe, so it probably has only hand brakes. Cars like these were not uncommon on electric lines, particularly in the midwest. They were especially designed to go around super-tight street railway curves. Few were ever used in interchange. Usually they were in freight-house to urban customer service, or freight-house to freight-house service on some of the larger interurbans. Motor trucks pretty much doomed them by the 1930s. Yes, it could have been interchanged, and likely was, but only with other electric railway lines.

If I'm correctly reading the road number on the car end, it appears to be SP 615200, built by Whitehead & Kales in early 1963. These cars are treated at length in Anthony Thompson's SP Freight Cars, vol. 4.
One thing that leaves me a bit confused is that the pictures of this car in Thompson's book appear to show it lacking a roof walk, both at the builder (pg. 446) and early in its service life in 1965 (pg. 444). But in the link posted to the list, it has a roof walk. Perhaps I'm missing something... or misreading the car number? Anyway, to answer the question, 1955 is too early for this car. This is a CN 1929 standard boxcar, built as the CN 503500-513152 series between 1929 and 1931 (this particular example was built in April 1930, which narrows the source car series somewhat to 505851-510352).

This looks to be a CN 1923 standard boxcar (CN 500500-503499, built from 1923 to 1927). A number of these cars found their way to the Quebec, North Shore & Labrador around 1960. I have no information about Wabush, which may have acquired their own, or one of the QNS&L cars.

Unfinished project from Jim Hayes

Before his passing, Jim Hayes sent me a picture of a kit he purchased from me decades ago. It is a GN 1958 built stock car, rebuilt from GN's 31000 series of 40' Z-bar Pratt truss SS box cars. GN converted over 1000 box cars into stock cars in the late 1950s. Donors were USRA DS cars, 1937-1942 DS 45000 series of box cars plus the above mentioned series. They even famously made long glacier green painted stock cars from mating pairs of 40' box car donors. Jim and I had quite a few phone calls together in his last months--made me wish we had visited years earlier. I met Jim at a Naperville RPM met and he was always easy to converse with.
