Sorry - been busy setting up the old computer that was downgraded to the train room. The ACL set was inspired by my friend Steve Hoxie who I'm hoping will write it up perhaps in the SCL-Modeler (cuz I know John Golden has been pumping him for input).

I did a similar one years ago for Frisco (see: http://home.comcast.net/~jerryglow/modeling/SLSF_rebuilt.html You cut the side/roof casting apart and discard the roof scratching a new one from sheet and strip stock. Assemble the "box" using Tichy's 5-5-5 ends and an Accurail USRA underframe (necessary because the kit is a rebuild from a 50ton SS car and we're modeling a one from a 40ton DS car). I can go into further detail if necessary but that's the basics. Jerry Glow

Mike, not sure which magazine article you're referencing; at any rate, I wouldn't start with the Tichy HO scale model as it's too tall and has the wrong roof for the ACL USRA DS rebuilds. Instead, I'd start with either the Atlas "Rebuilt" boxcar with 5/5/5 ends and fishbelly underframe (part no 6400-1 undec), rework the side sills for the proper support brackets and inset, and change out the trucks; or go with Sunshine kits 64.67-64.70 out of the box. http://www.atlasrr. com/HOFreight/ hosteelrebuilt. htm http://www.sunshine kits.com/ sunimages/ sun64h.pdf FWIW, the Atlas car is a hermaphrodite that doesn't accurately model any rebuilt SS or DS boxcar; however, the 5/5/5 end version is closest to the ACL/C&WC/SL- SF prototypes and can be kitbashed as discussed above. It's listed on the Walthers site -- "adv. res." for all roadnames -- but not on Accurail's own. A forthcoming kit?

I was looking for FGE wood refrigerator car kits from Accurail over at the Walthers site and noticed Accurail kit 112-8304 40;' Steel Reefer with Hinged Door - (Kit) Fruit Growers Express.
I was not aware that Accurail had a steel hinged door reefer. Has anyone seen this and, if so, offer any comments? Thanks, Marty

Hershey Rlwy in Cuba
jim peters
Good day . . .
'THE RAILWAY THAT CHOCOLATE BARS BUILT' by Stephen D. Maquire - Ralway Magazine, Oct 1960 A good article covering the railways in Cuba. Mentions a car ferry from Palm Beach to Casa Blanca, Cuba the terminus for the Hershey Rlwy. The article also indicates (1 sentence) and I quote, 'Originally the cars were ferried across the deep water from Key West'. A similar ferry service ran from West Palm Beach terminal to Havana. Note the Hershey Rlwy never ran to Havana. 'A PHOTOGRAPHER LOOKS BACK' by William D. Middleton - Rail Classics, May 1978 The article briefly mentions the electric operation on the Hershey Rlwy. There is another book I'm aware of - and is a rather in-depth study of the sugar railways of Cuba by Adolf Hungrywolf. Unfortunately a couple years ago I lent my copy to a fellow hobbyist I no longer have a phone number for, who hasn't found it necessary to extend the common courtesy of returning it. (Hey **!^%#** hope your reading this) Adolf in the past prepared a few articles for RailModel Craftsman - If you could contact him, he has enough information on the Cuban lines to fill several volumes - But the sales were not sufficient on his first to warrant any further efforts. Also through the Yahoo group 'SOUTH OF THE BOARDER' contact Dr. John Kirchner - He's the most knowledgeable I've met on Latin American sugar and banana rlwys. You could try Frank Berry through the 'MexList' another Yahoo group. This is the extent of my knowledge and hope my useless ramble helps . . . Thank you for your reply. It sounds like I will paint one silver car with black lettering and then another car black with the red triangle logo. I will have to look and see if the decals for the SN3 tank cars are close in size to what would be needed on a HO scale standard gauge car. However, those decals are green lettering so that won't work either. It may be easier to find one of the old Proto 2000 tank cars for the silver with black lettering. Thanks again, Shay Stark

Western Refrigerator and NWX relationship?
Bill Welch
Was there an operational agreement and relationship between the Green Bay & Western owned Western Refrigerator and NWX? For example did they have an agreement to furnish cars to each other during shortages? The fact that at one time each company's cars were painted grey seems more than coincidental. Also, they both used similar if not identical AC&F designed and built cars.

new decals added

I'm gradually adding new sets to my small line of specality decals:
http://home.comcast.net/~jerryglow/decals.html Recent additions include sets for ACL and P&LE/PMcK&Y rebuilt boxcars, and a single door version of the Soo Line AAR '37 w/ $ sign logo. My niche is (without criticizing the manufacturers) replacement sets for lesser quality offerings especially in F&C and Tichy kits and "bashable" projects for which no decals exist. I may be interested in adding a set not listed: as usual, contact me OFF LIST Jerry Glow

I'm not sure what US stores carry CN Lines Scalecoat I or II paint, but maybe Flying Yankee Enterprises, CN Lines' US distributor, could tell you. I know that a few US stores do carry this paint and other CN Lines products. Here is Flying Yankee's email address-- hutchfye@... I have used Scalecoat #2 Oxide Red for CN cars. It's a little warmer a colour than CN Red #11, and far more readily available at most LHS. Model-Flex 16-14 Light Tuscan Oxide Red works very well if you prefer acrylic paint for painting a CN car. Re: Pressed Steel Car Co. factory location
Great maps Eric. I wish we had that feature on the Library and Archives Canada site I use for maps of Vancouver. While Pittsburgh is not my modelling focus, I can see from those maps that an amazing switching layout could be based on any one of the smaller plates - tons of trackage in there - let alone that whole stretch along the river! Thanks for posting them.
