I think everybody is a bit confused here. Most of the photographs actually depict the standard 42'6" flatcars that were used in Caterpillar service. From what I have been told, GM&O listed them as 41' flatcars because they measured to the edges of the wood deck rather than total usable space. There are one or two photographs in that list that are not GSC cars, but probably more likely depict rebuilds of cars from other builders. I don't see any 53'6" cars in the photo group. ExactRail's GSC flatcars are the correct model to represent these. |

Union Pacific S-40-6 Livestock Cars Available (HO Scale Kit) This car is available (limited quantities, some numbers no longer available) in two paint schemes from the Union Pacific Historical Society. The S-40-6 stock cars were originally built as single deck stock cars when delivered to the UP in 1918. They were re-built starting in 1941 to double deck cars and numbered into the 41000 series. This group of cars represent the Pre-1955 scheme with stripes above and below the car number. Cleaning off my desk

I usually try to work on one model at a time. Beings I had to wait for trucks and mad a stupid goof I also needed to wait for decals for the KCS PS-1. So, I opened the SL_SF Sunshine kit I bought a couple Wednesdays ago. Then I picked up the P2K CB&Q auto car kit for $6 and picked a assembled Ribside Cars model out of a $5 a car pop flat at a swap meet a couple weeks ago thinking they would take long to finish. I had to do more work to them that I thought, but finally cleared my desk yesterday morning. Just in time to start on basically a scratch building project for Jason Klocke. He wants three of the FDDM&S welded bulkhead flats built after time stops for this list.
Instead of writing a book detail what I did on each car I think it's best to just answer any questions someone may have. Clark

The Tichy kit for this car (no.1000) has a separate frame, but does not have as a separate part the portion of the frame that is level with the deck. I believe that the Walthers kit for this car did so, but I don't know if the Walthers kit is still available from Walthers, but that kit should show up on Ebay and other reseller sites.
I am asking others of this group to confirm my recollection of the Walthers kit, as I did not purchase one.

The photos show a wonderful modeling opportunity, with the flatcar decks being assembled on the two tracks, perhaps add frames on the side, or flatcar with the frames aon the track waiting for assembly.

Since I am (somewhat) responsible for part of the original question, there were a few, but very few, errors in the UTLX book. I have created an errata document that I will post on this group’s web site.
In particular, the large group of 10,000 gallon tank cars built in 1919 and 1920 had 54” domes, not 60” ones. This large group of cars have become the prototype for the Rapido model.
I hope that this clears up the confusion.

The issues concerning consistency between car numbers and physical details were discussed extensively back in September beginning with message 187168. Bill Schneider is well aware of them and is working closely with Steve Hile to enure maximum fidelity. These models will be fine. And yes, they do offer an undec model (I ordered some).

Rapido welcomes feedback and they will change what ever is necessary to make the product correct. It is still a preorder so there's plenty of time for the corrections, as long as they know about the problems.
