IM upcoming PFE Reefers

Brian Carlson

These cars have been discussed over the past few weeks on the list but I
have a few more questions. I model 1957 so I am interested in cars with both
B&W heralds.
Stock # 47403 R-30-18 This car shows all orange hardware and no stripes
above and below the reporting marks. Per the painting and lettering
information in the PFE book this happened in 1951 and 19532 respectively.
The resolution isn't good enough to see if the periods are there or not.
However, it appears the UP medallion is red, white, and Blue. It should be
all black shouldn't it? Hopefully, IM will address this issue. Ed Hawkins
noted this also but I didn't see a reply to his email.

And I know these aren't out yet but does anyone think IM will do the -21 and
-19 in the later 50's schemes?

No slight taken Dennis! I suppose it would be useful to occasionally remind people where these CBDs are though; the 1916 is especially useful for most on this list.

Now if someone will just add a 1920s one to the site...

Ray,

I certainly didn't mean to slight anyone. When I wrote the
reply to Mr. Chattfield, I was trying to think of an on-line
source to send his friend to, and couldn't. Having someone
post the link to the 1916 CBD on another list the same day
was just luck, I guess.

I got it then, *and* the 1912 edition as well.

In TS CYC 75 (reprinted from the '43 CBC), p 425, is a photo of DL&W 12394. It's a "before" picture in an article about rebuilding with steel sides.

In Kaminski's Magor book, p 80, are two builder's photos of DL&W 12929 from series 12800-12999, built 7/24.

I have a few dimensions from ORERs and a small hand full of pictures from Taber's Lackawanna series and the RPI website. Could use a few more photos and maybe a car diagram. These cars were gone by the end of WWII, since they aren't in my earliest car diagram book from 1947.

I will scan and send off-list.

1916 Car Builders Dictionary [was] standard framing sizes

Scott,

It will help to identify the original owner of the car and also the built
date. The construction for double-sheathed house car with steel

the appropriate Car Builders' Dictionary for that period.
Well, as luck would have it, the 1916 Car Builders Dictionary is available on the web; someone just posted this link on the P:48 modeling list: (Yes Virginia, there is freightcar modeling in scales other than HO)

http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924032183216

This doesn't answer the question of exactly what car this was, but 1916 is the perfect year to find comparable cars; the USRA double sheathed cars of a few years later were the bitter end of wood body framing as far as boxcars were concerned, and had steel ends. The examples in the 1916 book are more typical.

This is the first time I've had access to the 1916 edition; 1906 has been reprinted years ago in its entirety by Gregg, but is now rare, 1912 and 1919 were excerpted in the TSC series, and the 1922 is now available on CD from Rail Driver. The Sunshine kits which Bill was referring to are Kits 87.1 through 87.16. As Bill did not specify the specific kit he found the discrepancy, then it could apply either one or all of the kits in this group.

So, as Bill has said, it is best that you check the kits that you have in this number series.

Sunshine GATX Type 30 8k Tank Car

william darnaby

I have discovered, after getting well into the kits, that the two Type 30 tank cars I picked up from Martin at Naperville have 10k gallon tanks instead of 8k.  These kits feature Intermountain tank bodies and resin everything else.  Martin says they received a long awaited order from IM of tank bodies just in time to pack kits for Naperville but not noticing that they were 10k instead of the requested 8k.  Since realizing the mistake at the end of last year, Martin has been attempting to get the correct 8k tanks out of IM but with no sucess.  IM did manage to ship 8k bottom halves and 10k top halves but that did not help things much.  Martin expects to get this sorted out in the next few weeks.

Anyway, Martin has no idea who has these kits so if you have purchased any check out the tank in your kit and compare it to the diagram in the kit that gives the tank diameter for both sizes.  The real tipoff, which is how I noticed it, is that the resin dome almost fits the 10k IM tank without modification to the opening.  If you have the wrong tank just drop Martin a line and it will be replaced.

BTW, I am not doing this on Martin's behalf.  I just thought you guys would like to know.

Thanks Bob, I saw that after I had hit send. That C of G flat has a non revenue number, 34XXX,  I'm almost positive that was the one used for Blue Bird at Fort Valley.  Todd Horton

Yes I pointed this story out on BBFCL last week... the auto racks
date from around 1963-1964. The CG flat car is stenciled 1962. I love
how the autos were just brought to a grade crossing and loaded right
there onto the flats.
