'65. It had 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught ends with the rolling pin taper, I think a rectangular panel roof, and a 6 or 7 foot wide Youngstown door with wide recessed seams. The car had 10 panel riveted sides, with a side sill reinforcement under the door (probably a later addition). The car was an orange-yellow with red lettering, and possibly a galvanized roof. Over the reporting marks was "Expressway For Industry" slogan. In Classic Freight Cars, Vol. I, there was a James Marcus c. '82 photo of car no. 3010. This car, at this point, had been rebuilt with roof hatches to carry loose granulars, classified LC. In 1958, a total of 11 cars had been so converted (nos. 3005, 3008, 3010, 3012, 3023, 3027, 3045-3049). Rich Christie

A Data Lettering Question
Eric Hansmann
I have lettering conundrum that is stalling progress on a few recent car shop builds. I have settled on modeling late 1926. Rolling stock, locos and other modeling elements will be built to reflect a November 1926 timeframe. In 1926, the ARA approved new recommendations for car data lettering that would take effect in 1927. I made a PDF of the 1920-1926 lettering guide and the 1927 lettering guide. The 2.2 MB file can be accessed here so you may understand the differences:
http://www.hansmanns.org/ARA_lettering_guidelines_1920_+_1927.pdf I know many Westerfield decals for freight cars of that era have the proper detail, but that may be the only vendor with correct-for-1926 decals. Has anyone else faced this difficulty when modeling the 1920-1927 period? I have found Rail Graphics has generic data sets available. One for 1900-1920s: http://www.railgraphicsdecals.com/h107.jpg And one for 1920-1940s: http://www.railgraphicsdecals.com/h108.jpg Many box cars, gondolas and hoppers of 1926 were of different height and length combinations. Replacing individual dimensions on many lines will be necessary to accuratly letter a variety of freight cars. Has anyone discovered an easier solution? As an example, F&C recently released the ARA 1923 single sheathed box car, which the L&N had two thousand of by late 1926. The provided decals are for a later period. What would be the fix to do correct lettering for 1926? Is there a need for a new decal product to make this easier for modelers of the 1920s? Images of various common cars can be collected then extract and clean up the data to make artwork for new decal sets. A few different box car data sets could fit onto one sheet. It may encourage easier prototype modeling of the 1920s era and into the 1930s as some freight cars wore the older data style for many years. I have posted this to other YahooGroups focussed on the decades before WWII, but received only one suggestion. Any thoughts or suggestions from the STMFC bunch? These might fit well in the collection of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum Library, and they would be available to researchers. How much to ship?

Freight Transportation Books - Free for the cost of shipping
proto48er
Guys -
I have been cleaning out the bookshelves to make room for the many great new freight car books that have been published lately (thanks to Thompson, Hendrickson, Karig, et al.) I have 45 pounds of freight transportation books and publications that I will send FREE to anyone who wants them, if they will just pay for the shipping! A 16 inch-high stack of 15 hardback books were from the collection of Edwin A. Starr, a professor of transportation at Texas Christian University in Ft Worth, Texas. The titles include books on ICC Trafic Management, Transportation Law, ICC Traffic Law, 1961 ICC Annual Reports, and a book, Interpretation of Freight Tariffs which was authored by Mr. Starr himself, and signed by his widow. The remaining soft-bound volumes are freight tariffs from the southwest area and a volume entitled Principles of Land Transportation. This soft-bound stack is 14 inches high! The books are mostly from the 1950's up to 1961. The freight tariffs range into the 1970's. If anyone here is crazy enough to want to understand freight routing, tariffs, and the workings of the ICC, this pile will keep you "off the street" for a while! PM me. I just HATE to throw arything away! A.T. Kott

Tim,
John Kellett from Saginaw, MI. Of all things I have been trying to get ahold of the D&M Historical society, but their email is defunct. If you mind, could you email me a picture of the cars? I have seen the 40' boxcar with the white over red with the large letters DM, but was stumped as to the earlier boxcars. Thank you very much, I appreciate the help. John Kellett Saginaw, MI ________________________________ From: Tim O'Connor <timboconnor@...> To: STMFC@... Hi EdTim, From color matching I did 20 years ago, lot 3255 matched a mix of 3 parts Scalecoat #2 and 1 part Scalecoat #13. In earlier discussion with Jerry Glow, I messed up and specified a code that I assigned for one of the paint mixes (S11) instead of providing the actual formula. Sorry for the confusion, so this will hopefully clear up the Scalecoat #11 that I erroneously specified to Jerry. In general terms, all of the box car paint samples for CNW from 1943 to 1948 were oxide in color, however, there was some variability in the shades. Some matched Scalecoat paint mixes, some matched Accupaint colors, and some matched Floquil mixes. Regards, Ed Hawkins

D&M and LS&I boxcar questions
Frank Valoczy <destron@...>
I'd have a couple of quick questions...
1. What roofs did Detroit & Mackinac 2800-3099 and Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2201-2225 srs boxcars have? 2. Regarding the D&M cars: I've seen a number of photos, in some of which the cars are in a grey (white? silver?) with black lettering, and some which have a boxcar red; judging from the quite large "D&M" on the red car, I'm assuming it's a later scheme than the grey/black one. What I'd ask has two parts: A, when was the grey/black scheme first introduced? B, what sort of livery were these cars most commonly found in in 1947? Frank Valoczy Vancouver, BC

Re: FGE 35204
Bill, Shay,
Even though it was designed for the IM car, I highly recommend Ted's (Speedwitch) FGE set. It can be manipulated to make other number sets and while the Sunshine lettering is OK, next to the Speedwitch set there is really no comparison. Hopefully, Ted will be coming out with a full FGE set in the future. The emergency box cars built in 1943 were CNW Freight Car Paint with a paint sample matching Accupaint #12 Oxide Brown (an oxide shade).
