Guys -

I have been cleaning out the bookshelves to make room for the many great new freight car books that have been published lately (thanks to Thompson, Hendrickson, Karig, et al.)

I have 45 pounds of freight transportation books and publications that I will send FREE to anyone who wants them, if they will just pay for the shipping!

A 16 inch-high stack of 15 hardback books were from the collection of Edwin A. Starr, a professor of transportation at Texas Christian University in Ft Worth, Texas. The titles include books on ICC Trafic Management, Transportation Law, ICC Traffic Law, 1961 ICC Annual Reports, and a book, Interpretation of Freight Tariffs which was authored by Mr. Starr himself, and signed by his widow.

The remaining soft-bound volumes are freight tariffs from the southwest area and a volume entitled Principles of Land Transportation. This soft-bound stack is 14 inches high!

The books are mostly from the 1950's up to 1961. The freight tariffs range into the 1970's.

If anyone here is crazy enough to want to understand freight routing, tariffs, and the workings of the ICC, this pile will keep you "off the street" for a while!

1. All of them have standard rectangular panel roofs.

2A. The earliest pictures I have of these cars in gray is 1962 but
I think they were first painted that way in the 1950's.

2B. The 2800-2999 were delivered in 1947, in plain lettering style
with freight car red paint. I have a 1956 color shot of such
a car if you need it.

Yes, the large D&M lettering appeared in the 1960's.

1. What roofs did Detroit & Mackinac 2800-3099 and Lake Superior &
Ishpeming 2201-2225 srs boxcars have?

2. Regarding the D&M cars: I've seen a number of photos, in some of which
the cars are in a grey (white? silver?) with black lettering, and some
which have a boxcar red; judging from the quite large "D&M" on the red
car, I'm assuming it's a later scheme than the grey/black one. What I'd
ask has two parts: A, when was the grey/black scheme first introduced? B,
what sort of livery were these cars most commonly found in in 1947?

I am looking for picture and information on CNW boxcar series 142100 to 143698 even numbers built by GATC in 1946 for a modeling project.
When did the CNW from brownish to reddish paint?

Bruce, this seems like a simple question, but it's not. Most general
arrangement drawings don't show details of the brake equipment, and
in photographs the retainer valves on pre-WW-II AC&F cars are almost
invariably hidden behind the wood running boards. The same issue
came up when Life-Like was developing their models of the AC&F Type
21 tank cars and I was finally able to find a high-angle end photo of
a Type 21 which showed the retainer valve mounted just behind the
running boards on a bracket attached to the diagonal frame member
which extended out to the left corner of the underframe at the B
end. That's not a definitive answer to where it was located on the
Type 11 and Type 17 underframes, of course. However, it's a logical
place to put it, where it's close to the hand brake and accessible to
train crews by reaching over the running boards at either the side or
the B end of the car, and I think it is reasonable to assume that it
was in the same location on AC&F cars built prior to the advent of
the Type 21 design.

Brian is correct. "RD" was a very common abbreviation in conductor's
train books, interchange records, and other documents for "SFRD," and
the numbers above are all valid SFRD numbers.

Thanks Bill and Bruce,

I thought the lack of a side sill on the prototype car was interesting as the few pictures of the cars I had seen all had side sills or were truss rod cars. I saw the Kahns clinic in one of the online magazines and printed it out as I liked some of the ideas that were presented there. I would be interested in seeing the modification for the 12-1" car as this could be a fun project. I wonder who makes an accurate set of decals?
