Re: UP Freight Conductors' Train Books
Mike Brock <brockm@...>
Regarding the UP frt conductor books, Larry sent me copies of two trains. Coincidentally, the trains ran on May 13 and May 14 which is interesting to me since my layout simulates May 14 although, of course, any date in the period May/June works. Anyhow, the eastbound train consists primarily of PFE cars carrying lettuce and peas. Following UP practice as noted in my 1949 books, UP did little car blocking on EBs, the rear of the train containing box cars containing lbr and bottles and one GATX tank car...#970...containing wine interspersed within the PFE cars. I assume the train would be iced at Laramie although I don't know the tempature in Laramie which could be anything within 40 and 75 at the 1135AM arrival time.
One thing that might be interesting is to compare train operation and tonnage between 1938 and 1949. The two 1938 trains were pulled by 3919 and 3926, early 4-6-6-4's, the EB with 73 cars, 3335 tons, in route from Rawlins [ MP 683 ] 6:10AM to Laramie [ MP 566 ] 1010AM, 117 miles, 29.25 mph avg [ 97548 ton miles ] . The WB contained primarily PFE MTs, 74 cars, 1950 tons, in route from 540PM Laramie until 935PM to Rawlins...29.87 MPH [ 58246 ton miles ]. Randomly selected train on April 3, 1949, pulled by late 4-6-6-4 3986, 72 cars, 3585 tons, left Rawlins at 420PM, arrived Laramie at 740PM. 35MPH [ 125475 ton miles ]. And April 9, 1949, WB Big Boy 4018, 93 cars, 3300 tons [ 78 MTs ], left Laramie at 130P, arrived Rawlins 530P...4 hrs, 29.25 mph [ 96525 ton miles ]. Hmmm. On April 21, 1949, diesels 1454, 1450, and 1419 left Laramie at 315P, arrived Rawlins at 720P with 81 cars, 3884 tons. 28.65 mph [ 111288 ton miles/hr ]. April 15, Big Boy 4006 left Laramie at 605P, arrived Rawlins 905P...85 cars, 4152 tons. 39 mph [ 161928 ton miles/hr ]. The winner? Big Boy 4006. While conclusions from these data are extremely unreliable because we have no information regarding track conditions [ read that...other trains that might be in the way ], it IS noteworthy that UP found Big Boys superior to a 3 unit diesel at speeds above 25 mph and late Challengers to be equal to a 3 unit diesel at speeds above 25 mph. Good day all,
Thank you for the replys/info. regarding the "recessed side". Additional information received as well as diagrams and more photos prove that the "recess" is actually a shadow from the full height door stop. Best regards, Dave Lawler

JN reweigh symbol on refurbished boxcars

My best guess is JN stands for Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown, PA plant, but I would appreciate any confirmation that this plant was doing rebuilds in the late 1950s-early 60s time frame, or that they used the JN reweigh symbol. A.A. Morrison of Buffalo, NY, under two or three different corporate monikers, was the broker of these lease deals and owner of the cars, and he used Greenville Steel Car, also of PA, to repair or rebuild other lots of second-hand boxcars. If anyone has background information on Mr. A.A. Morrison and his business activity I'd be appreciative to learn of it. He appears to be one of the Morrison freight car and steel clan in upstate New York, but operating as something of a free agent in these freight car leasing agreements. He appears to have approached the NP some time around 1959 upon seeing a business opportunity to help alleviate recurring west coast boxcar shortages). Chris Frissell Polson, MT

UP Freight Conductors' Train Books
Wendye Ware
Hi Folks
While rummaging through the attic of the Laramie Depot, I came across a box of Union Pacific Freight Conductors' Train Books. There are 128 of them, mostly from June, 1937, to August, 1938. I believe that the majority are for the run between Laramie and Rawlins on the UP mainline. All are brittle, but all except one appear to be readable. I'm in the process of transcribing the data from one of them (from 5/13/1938 to 6/21/1938, conductor Ferguson) to an Excel file and hope to have a preliminary analysis complete within a few days. Perhaps the information from these books will shed some light on the issue of freight car distribution. Here is a list of the from/to dates for these books, and the conductor. Group,
Don't know if these will post on the list, ergo, I copied Mike D--who may know how to post them. These are two photos of the bracing on an LV container car--they were taken by Dick Steinbrenner in Florence Yard about 35 years ago. LV cars were all converted from regular gons, unlike the DL&W, which had both converted and purpose-built cars. I've had a number of these cars in service on my (now DL&W, formerly CNJ/LV) railroad for 30 years or so-- Jim Dalberg Paoli

Sure enough, a check in the Morning Sun SP&S Color guide uncovers a photo of a six panel SS car in work service. It also states that the car was rebuilt as office car X-285 in 1945, but doesn't say that this was the first use the SP&S put it to.This is a silly story, Dennis. I am sorry my message was poorly worded and created so much confusion. To clarify I hope, Terry took a what I believe was a Sunshine kit, assembled sides, ends and put a roof on it, although I not sure whose roof it was, and cast some for himself and some of us were able to get some. I my case I think I acquired 3 of the 4 kits I ended up with from a friend. These were never distributed widely, and were an insider "friend of Terry's" kind of thing.
There are model photos of ART 20555 and 22428 on the Steam Era Freight Cars website under models built from these castings. The aforementioned BREX &WFEX Sunshine kits are truss rod kits with double board roofs with side and ends cast as one unit. I used FGE Sunshine sides and scratch built the ends and roof to create the patterns for these. Bill Welch

Bill, if it is a one piece body, it is NOT a Sunshine kit, as Martin has never done any one piece castings, except for the quasi gondolas castings. PFE/ART resin kit Actually I think they are a Sunshine kits cast as a one piece body. They come with brass foot holds for the roof, and a choice of ice hatch covers. From the photo I have showing the outside metal roof from a relatively high angle, I determined the number of roof ribs was not correct, so I removed the ones that were cast on and replaced them with strip styrene. I think my two models are still pictured on the Steam Era website. I used a combination of Sunshine, Champ and Terry's decals. Based on a recommendation I saw I think in the MPHS magazine, I used Modelflex D&RGW gold to paint the sides. I built two, one w/fans and still have two unbuilt kits Bill Welch --- In STMFC@yahoogroups. com, asychis@... wrote: [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
