Re: Vallejo paint
Aha...someone else has discovered the Vallejo 70.814 as an excellent SP Freight car red. I don't airbrush (I used to, but for many reasons gave up the habit) but have found that using the Tamiya Oxide primer and then a wash of the burnt red is an excellent substitute for PBL Star Brand SP-UP FCR.

Re: Trio of UP tank cars...
Garth the UP O-50-6 was a later car, and really didn't look much like these cars although they were about the same gallonage. Tim O'Connor

Re: Trio of UP tank cars...
Garth Groff and Sally Sanford <mallardlodge1000@...>
Tim, The lead car appears to be UP 69247, which was part of series 69200-69295. My ORER doesn't give the gallonage, but the tank was 35' X 7' 11". I will come back to this in a moment. The middle car is UP 69701, which came from series 69500-67740. It had the same size tank, and is clearly marked for 12,642 gallons, so we may assume that 69247 has a similar volume. UP 69247 has a taller expansion dome, and probably is a bit older than the middle car, or the car on the left. All three tanks are similar to the old Athearn single-dome tank car. Kit bashing similar SP cars from the Athearn model was covered by the late Richard Hendrickson in the August 1996 RMJ. The SP cars were class O-50-12 of 1928 at 12,526 gallons, and O-50-13 of 1942 at 12,515 gallons. Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

This advertisement showing an "LW" gondola - clearly an SP subsidiary - led me to find this information online. It appears to be a standing project of the "Wiki Project" (disclaimer I make monthly small $ contributions to Wikimedia). Help dating this photo
Clark Propst
I figure the best way to date this photo is to asked when the NYC did away with their S prefix? Sure appears the closest hopper's number starts with an S? The hopper in front of it is a panel side. A 1930s aerial photos shows the stock pens, they are gone in a 1950s aerial.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Clark Propst

Re: Photo: SP Hi-Cube Boxcar (1955)
The car definitely received a running board. (I have another photo.) The car is especially interesting because it is a superstructure built on a FLAT CAR underframe. Whitehead & Kales is mostly known for building autoracks on flat cars. Tim O'Connor

If I'm correctly reading the road number on the car end, it appears to be SP 615200, built by Whitehead & Kales in early 1963. These cars are treated at length in Anthony Thompson's SP Freight Cars, vol. 4. --

Re: Trio of UP tank cars...
I don't know much about UP tank cars but these appear to be rebuilds (old tank on a new underframe?). It's just a guess, but they are 4-course tanks and have the open-grid walkways that became mandated for new tank cars in the 1940's. Tim O'Connor

Re: SP 30251 gon in 1979
G-50-21A built by ACF in 1949 (the "A" indicating a rebuilt car that received steel sides) These were "War Emergency" design gondolas bought by the THOUSANDS by the T&NO and they lasted a long time. Funaro & Camerlengo makes this kit, but they only market the rebuilt cars as ACL. Go figure. Tim O'Connor

Hi Claus,
This is Ma & Pa X-11, not X-41. X-11 was built in 1927 as NJI&I 78103. The Ma & Pa received it in 1956 and kept it on the roster until 1983. It still exists at the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society in Muddy Creek Forks, Pa. The NJI&I reporting marks are still legible on the interior of the car. Here is an ebay image of SP 615200 with its doors shut providing a more complete view of its exterior.
https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/183141984253_/Original-Slide-Southern-Pacific-SP-615200-Hy-Cube-Boxcar.jpg SP Freight Car Specification Sheet No. 17 Hydra Cushion Hy-Cube Box Cars describes in more detail the cars that succeeded the original Whitehead & Kales car. It can be found, along with several of the car series and dimensions, here: https://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?96312-Suggestions-for-Jointed-Rail-(Not-Locomotives)/page30&styleid=7 Given the date of this car's manufacture, further discussion of this thread should probably move over to the Baby Boomers https://groups.io/g/bbfcl and Modern Freight car https://groups.io/g/MFCL groups I think that the info stating "1955" in the Arizona Memory Project must be a typo. Nevertheless, I enjoyed learning about this car and thank Bob for asking the initial question that started this thread. -- Chris Barkan Champaign, IL

I believe this may actually be SP 615200 a B-70-18. It was a one car class built by Whitehead and Kales in 1963 and was the fore-runner of SPs 86’ Hy Cube cars. A bit of a rarity. http://www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/box/b070-18.htm

Looking for O Scale Intermountain Reefer Kit instructions
William Hirt
I just had a friend call me and he has been given an Intermountain O Scale reefer kit to assemble. It is factory painted BREX. The kit has no instruction sheet(s). Does anyone have any of these reefer kits so that they could scan and send me the instructions? I can then print them out for him.
Many thanks, Bill Hirt

The IR did so some interchange with the Monon south of Greencastle where its cars would be given to the Monon for delivery to the very nearby cement works. These cars would be immediately returned to the IR for delivery to some customer on its system. There is a photo of this on page 51 in the IR book by Bradley.

Not legal for interchange on the general rail system, but it is built to the specifications to allow interchange on Central Electric Railroad Association member roads, so could likely be seen on any interurban in Indiana or Ohio.
