NC&StL #18503 (1937 AAR) -- correct trucks?

Regarding Ed Hawkins' PS-1 spreadsheet, what is the P/B
column? I thought it might be tackboard placement (H/L)
but then some of the cells are "H/O"... ??
Tim,
From the bill of materials for the NC&StL 1937 AAR cars series
18500-18999, all cars had AAR spring plankless trucks with the first
250 from Scullin and the last 250 from American Steel Foundries. All
cars had chilled wheels.

I don't have an appliance breakdown on the NC&StL PS-1s except that
Miner, Ajax, and Universal hand brakes were used as well as Kerrigan,
U.S. Gypsum, and Apex running boards & brake steps.

Cars 22071 and 22145 that were in the front end of the order received
Miner hand brakes and Kerrigan running boards & brake steps. This is
documented by photos. Car 22322 had a U.S. Gypsum running board & brake
step. Cars 22482 & 22631 had Universal hand brakes and Apex running
boards & brake steps.

In the 40' PS-1 roster I compiled, P/B refers to the placement of the
Placard Boards on the doors. The first letter (either H or L)
designates if the door placard was in a high or low position. The
second portion designates if the placard was centered (C) or offset (O)
to one side. Any number (either a 2 or 3) designates the panel position
of the placard for variations found on 6-panel Superior doors. For
variants of 7-panel Superior doors, I don't specify where the placard
was located because the location is inherent in the door description.

Congratulations, Mr. Duckworth!

I took the tour of your layout. Its simplicity is beautiful, making the models of structures and cars stand out all the more. It is what I wish I had done. Thank you.

Re: NC&StL box cars

S hed <shed999@...>

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this group so I hope I'm not repeating what someone else said but I do have some material on NC&StL cars because I was modeling the railroad at one time. So I do have a lot of material that I have collected over the years including Freight Cars Journal #63 on the NC&StL and the N&C's 1955 freight car diagram book.

So here is a brief summary of their steel box car roster:

XM-30 ARA 1932 18000 - 18301 Pullman (May 1937)
18302 - 18499 Pullman (June 1937)
Spring Plankless Trucks, wood running boards
All cars delivered with the "Dixie Line" logo only
I have photos that show these cars also were repainted in the Express service, "Brushstroke", and the yellow
stripe paint schemes.

XM-31 17800 - 17844 AC&F (1937)
Dahlman trucks, wood running boards
Rebuilt from FM-9 70200-series flat cars
All cars delivered in the "Dixie Line" logo only
The FM-9 flat cars are the Tichy cars
XM-32 20000 - 21179 NC&StL (1939 to 1945)
Cast Steel trucks, Apex Tri-Lok running boards, Miner "3290" hand brake
Rebuilt from wood sheathed box cars mainly from the XM-27 and XM-28 classes
The first car was delivered in the "Dixie Line" logo on the right hand side and the cursive "To and from
Dixieland" slogan on the left hand side. Eventually these cars were seen in the Brushstroke and yellow stripe
paint schemes.

XM-34 1937 AAR 18500 - 18999 Pullman (February and March 1942)
Miner "3290" hand brake, Spring Plankless Trucks, Apex roof walk
Cars were delivered in the "Brushstroke" paint scheme and without the "coonskin" logo. That logo wasn't
used until April 22, 1944 but I have seen these cars with the Brushstroke and the coonskin logo. So I would
imagine that the last batch of cars that were delivered to the N&C got those logos applied to them when
they were being inspected at the West Nashville shops. Or maybe when the cars were being re-weighed
before the yellow striped scheme was introduced.

XM-35 1944 AAR 19000 - 19499 Pullman (August and September 1947)
Miner "D-3290-X" hand brake, ASF A-3 Ride Control trucks, US Gypsum running board
Cars delivered in the yellow stripe paint scheme

XM PS-1 22000 - 22649 Pullman (January and February 1952)
22000 - 22249 -> Miner D-3290-X hand brake, Kerrigan running board
22250 - 22449 -> Ajax hand brake, US Gypsum running board
22450 - 22649 -> Universal "1975-2195" hand brake, Apex running board
22000 - 22324 -> ASF A-3 Ride Control trucks
22325 - 22649 -> Scullin trucks
The car drawings do not say exactly which number series got what appliance. But judging from the what the
drawing says and from photo evidence that what I have listed is probably true to what the cars had when
they were delivered. These cars never got a classification number so they are not the XM-36 class.

I hope that this helps.

I hijacked the model's bulkheads for another project, and am left
with the
carbody which I would like to build as the pre-conversion MoPac
flatcar. Some
questions for the MoPac'ers on the list:

1) What number series were the predecessor flatcars that MoPac
rebuilt into
the #1400-1499 woodracks?

2) How many stake pockets per side on the MoPac 42-foot flatcars?

3) What color were the flatcars? (Black?)
Bob,
From available data that I've found, the cars were built new at MoPac's
DeSoto, Mo. shops in 1937. The M.P. diagram for the cars gives no
indications that they were converted from cars built earlier and state
they were built at DeSoto in 1937. The end bulkheads were Murphy
corrugated sheets that were most likely taken from dismantled box cars.

The good news for you is that the flat car used for the 1400-1499 rack
cars was from the same general arrangement drawing used on M.P. flat
cars in series 8600-8996 (built 1936) and 9000-9199 (built 1937). The
cars were 41'-3" over flooring and 42' over strikers. They had 13 stake
pockets per side and were painted black with white stencils through
1960.

Ron Merrick wrote a 6-page article about MoPac's 13 stake-pocket flat
cars that was published in the Fall 2006 Eagle, which is available on
the MPHS web site (www.mopac.org.). These flat cars also related
directly to MoPac's container service started circa 1954. This was a
subject of Dick Ryker's recent Naperville presentation.

Never. The PS-2 design was a covered hopper. Box cars of whatever
