That's an Owens-Corning Figerglass tank. Looks like a 20,000 tank OC sold their 3 plant in 1995 to Fluid Containment. One of those plants was in Mt Union PA.

Thanks guys. I severely misworded the original question. I don't have one of these minikits, but was wondering if the Alternate Standard hopper was similar enough dimensionally. Now I see that it isn't.
I would be happy to see these come back as well. If the NYCSHS is able to work with a manufacturer and produce the postwar 31'6" offset-side hopper as has been planned, the only apparent missing major holes in the NYC transition-era 2-bay hopper fleet would be the Common Standard hoppers. -Phil

Again, I don't think so. These hoppers are based on the USRA cars. The USRA car diagram is here PRR GLd were USRA cars E-93171 - class GLd The AAR standard offset cars diagram is attached' The truck centers and length over strikers are different and the AAR standard offset cars have the taper at the end three big things off the top. I'd still start with the Accurail USRA car. You might be able to use the MTH USRA car but it appears the grabs are not aligned on the MTH cars and that would drive me nuts. Brian Carlson

Well, I’ve gone this far. • Remove the offending pieces carefully. Use Tichy parts for the brake wheel and step. Use a scrap box retainer for the retainer. • Add trainline on side. • Add (after painting) air hoses and top mounted uncoupling rods. Any one know of air hose bracket part like the one below

The Tichy R-40-4 underframe unmodified is good for the WP cars. The Terry Wegmann R-30-18 underframe, sold by InterMountain, is good for the other RR Design or Built-up underframes. There was a discussion last year on the STMFC list: https://realstmfc.groups.io/g/main/topic/75910806#176466
Be careful of reference material from the 1980s. We have learned a lot since then, and some thoughts have changed. Also be careful of Mainline Modeler drawings. They are notorious for having errors.
Don’t know what led you to believe that the p.26 drawing from Phil Da Costa was a 40-ton underframe. It appears to be the same as the 444-C-2677 that I have posted, though his is mostly unreadable and cut off the drawing number.
Also, in spite of what Tichy says, their R-40-4 body is NOT the same as an R-30/40-9 body. So either resin kit bodies or the Red Caboose “tall” body can be used in HO for models of -9 cars. The differences between a 30-ton and 40-ton PFE RR Design underframe are not noticeable in HO scale.

Thanks to Mel Perry for pointing Irv toward me. I am not a frequent reader of any Groups.io. I do not yet have a copy of RP CYC #35, so I don't have the photo Irv referenced. So I will do some educated speculating. The build, renumber and retirement records for those boxcars (and all other UP equipment) can be found, courtesy of Don Strack, at: https://donstrack.smugmug.com/UtahRails/Union-Pacific-Equipment-Record Those records show that the original order for class B-50-19 was for 1000 cars, spilt evenly between two shops (though Omaha and Grand Island are not listed) and built 8-'36 to 5-'37. The order was enlarged by 188 cars that were all built in Omaha. The shop info is derived from UP Freight Car Diagrams. (See https://harley-trains.smugmug.com/UPFreightDiagrams for UP freight car diagrams.) Those last 188 cars (#182812 to 182999) were built in June and July of 1937. Now here comes some speculation. It is known (thanks to Terry Metcalfe and others) that UP started box and auto car slogans in 1936. It is believed that they were initially white, but I know of no color photos to prove that. It is also believed that those slogans were changed to Armour Yellow "within months" after initial applications. Since the B-50-19 class was built by UP, they could change lettering at will during the build, and I suspect that the slogan color was changed during the build - but have no proof if or when. So, I would pick a car number from the last 188 cars and use yellow slogans and feel fairly confident that is was true. There were apparently different versions of the ROTS slogan in CS Roman style, which are also not well documented with photos. Bob, The car in the photo, Rutland 378, was one of 101 PS-1 box cars, series 300-399 & one replacement car no. 223, built 8-56 in P-S lot 8300 at the Pullman-Standard Michigan City plant. Each car came with 8’ door openings & Pullman doors, Universal hand brake, Apex Tri-lok running boards & brake step, and A-3 Ride Control trucks. Approximately 22 years ago Kadee offered an accurate model of this exact car number (Kadee #5119). More recently about 5 years ago was Rutland 345 from the same series (Kadee #5256). Both are discontinued, i.e.; sold out at Kadee. On an unrelated mention, the Kadee web site is showing the release of 40’-6” PS-1 box car MEC 6730, series 6500-6749, built 10-47, P-S lot 5877. It’s one of just 8 lot numbers of the early 40’-6” PS-1 box cars having the Pullman welded roof, 6 lots of which match-up to available Kadee car bodies with either 6’ or 7’ door openings & 10-panel welded sides. The two other lots came with 12-panel welded sides. Full disclosure: While I do assist Kadee Quality Products with projects from time to time, I am not affiliated with the company in any way.
