That small track seems to run all over the place. In the bottom of the photo you see it again. Also to the far left (just above the concrete building and wheelsets) is what appears to be a switch and a crossing. The tie spacing looks to be maybe 3'.
What is that huge tressle in the background? Auto bridge? Jon Miller AT&SF For me time stopped in 1941 Digitrax, Chief/Zephyr systems, JMRI user NMRA Life member #2623 Member SFRH&MS

Mr. Carey, Actually, you aren't seeing a grain door. What you are seeing is a heavy paper door seal to prevent contamination of the boxcar's contents from moisture, etc. A grain door is a wooden door comprised of horizontal boards that is nailed to the inside of the wooden door posts of steam era boxcars. These seals could of course could be used for protection of other ladings as well. I have photos of other series of GN boxcars with these seals in place, but haven't ever seen it modeled. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Robert D. Heninger Stanley, ND

It appears that small track is used for, as you say, loading and unloading. There is cart in a part of the photo that has some lumber on it so I would assume that it would be used for bringing lumber for cribbing and shoring up loads. In the reverse the carts could be used for clearing away scrap lumber and / or other heavy items not otherwise easily tranported away.

Note what appears to be one foot gauge track between the NYC gon and the net track! You can see it in other parts of the photo even a little cart on it. I presume to help loading and unloading. I also find it interesting to see the dramatic difference in weathering of the rail. Some is bright orange rust, most is a grimy black color. Ned Carey

Thanks to Scott Pitzer for the original link.
Schuyler beat me to it by posting two Jack Delano links. Most of us already know of the Jack Delano photos in the Library of Congress but I like this site as it is easy to navigate via the previews of Jack's photos. Even though I have seen them before, I am still in awe everytime I see them again. Schuyler's posted this link http://www.shorpy.com/node/1859?size=_original Note the GN boxcar in the forground. Odds and Ends Before Santa Arrives
smason22000 <smason2@...>
Hi folks,
Just a couple of reminders before the month gets too old. If you've got a DVD on your Christmas list, and you'd like to make sure it's under the tree on Christmas morning, please, make sure your order in placed no later than December 18th. All DVD order received before 3:00 p.m. will go in that days' mail. Generally, it takes the USPS about 3-4 days to delivery a DVD anywhere in the U.S. Now is a perfect time to bring your collection up to date. I have produced three new DVD's this year, so please check out my website. Also, the December Scotty Mason Show Podcast, featuring interviews with Dave Frary and Don Railton, will be out next week. We're still trying to get caught up after the Craftsman Structure Show, and are slowly working our way back to our normal production schedule. If you haven't listened to our show yet, you can access it through my website, or through the I-Tunes Store. It's free. Speaking of the Craftsman Structure Show, plans are underway for CSS08, which will be held on November 13th, 14th and 15th at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield, MA. Registration is now being accepted, and rooms are filling up. Don't miss out on another great event. Go to our website: www.css08.com for more information. Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone for your support this year. DVD sales have skyrocketed, the Scotty Mason Show averages better than 17,000 downloads each month, and the Craftsman Structure Show was a huge success. I, and those associated with these things, owe that to you. Thank you, Scott Mason www.scottymason.com

Neither, it's simply an example of a freight car door "papered" to keep out the elements. Grain doors weren't visible once the door was shut though many of those car doors would have been sealed in the same fashion. Additionally, during the period of this photo; most, if not all, grain doors would have been constructed of pre-assembled wood varieties. I have one of the split Orange & Green cars. I think Desplaines Hobbies did that as a custom run. 1952 eh? I thought that would have been a later 50's scheme. Rob Manley

I will look for that set. I was reading a few of the references, and saw one that said the split green-over-orange scheme with billboard EJ&E and the banner herald on the left was introduced in 1952, which would be a great set for a lot of modelers, but you look through the decal catalogs and offerings, and it is amazing how many pretty common, or at least popular, box car scheme have not been done (at least well), in comparison with all these oddball one-of-a-kind schemes that folks have done. One could make a sideline out of doing good decals for things like the numerous B&O, EJ&E, NYC, PRR, RI, WAB classes (and other RRs), that have not been done, particularly if one were to build the car and present it in a magazine (and get everyone drooling). I can't remember exactly what they had in thier set but I remember it didn't have the Jumbo EJ&E or the correct single line version of thier herald. They also looked like they were rubber stamped. I was going to letter up a Robins Rail PS 50'er. Oh well, out of era anyway. Try Larsen Hobbies in New Lenox, IL for anything J,except the 3 mini-kits I bought him. I now realize that in my haste, I was not very clear about what I was looking for, which is the decals in HO for the lettering schemes following the bigger "map" herald of which you speak (and which Sunshine provided in their mini-kit and old EJ&E USRA steel rebuild). The ones I specifically would like to find are the large billboard letter schemes in either orange on green over orange, or vice versa, the earlier of which has the small "around not thru.." banner herald, And the latter ones of which only have the big billboard letters. There are a number of pictures of these cool schemes, but unless you have a mini-kit or like to bash things (shorty 8-foot Superior door...ends. ..body) you would not have an accurate car. Perhaps these guys just have never been done... B&LE did a lot of coil shipment on pallets in these 8' door box cars, like the P&WV with its AC&F 8'-door cars, and I would also be interested in who else might have done this. Request for VGN hopper photos
Tried this on the Virginian group without success. Working on a clinic
for the NWHS convention next year. Are there any photos out there of a) the 70 ton H-5 three bay hoppers after they were rebuilt into the three "standard" door configuration(center bay originally had clamshell doors), b)the 50 ton twin H-11 when they were still in the 5 panel configuration. Got the diagrams in the TLC Virginian equipment reprints, but would like to have some pictures. Credit will be given. Thanks in advance. Frank Bongiovanni bongiovanni1@...

Intermountain FGEX car
Don Worthy
Hey group,
I know that the IM car is a "rebuilt" version and the cars that I had earlier purchased were numbered correctly in the 57xxx series (going by Bill W's information) The other day my hobby man sent me another car. It is numbered 33xxx, although. I'm thinking that this number is incorrect for this version (again I'm looking at Bill's info) Did IM make a boo boo or I'm I missing something in Bill W's information??? This car has the "later" paint scheme (only has Refrigerator) and my other cars have the earlier scheme. Which, again, makes me think that this car would have been renumbered to the 56 or 57xxx numbers. Thanks ya'll and Merry Christmas Don Worthy Ivey, Ga. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
