No, the man's name was Edward Berwind. The name lives on in the Berwind Corporation, based in Philadelphia. They've gotten out of the coal mining business but still own coal lands and lease mining rights. They also have money in food processing equipment and some other lines I don't recall.

From the Wikipedia article on the Berwind Corporation: It began as a partnership of Edward Julius Berwind, Charles Berwind, and Congressman Allison White and upon White's death became known as Berwind White Company in 1886.

Actually, I think Berwind is Windber flipped.  I think the coal company came up with that one!

Windber, Pa. (Cambria County near Johnstown), was a company coal patch town. Windber is BERWIND flipped. In the 1990’s I was involved in a construction project in Windber and was fascinated that the Berwind-White Coal Company still had leased coal reserve holdings in that area in that era. FYI stuff!

Walthers has a history of pulling "facts" out of thin air. Years ago they claimed the Berwind-White Coal Co. was so named for their low smoke "white" coal when in fact Berwind and White were the two guys who started the corporation. That irked me then, this irks me now.

Re: M3 Tank - boxcar load

There are photographs of 2 1/2 ton CCKW trucks being loaded/unloaded through the side door of automobile cars. 2 1/2 ton trucks and 1/4 ton trucks (jeeps) probably accounted for more US military vehicles manufactured during WWII than all others combined.

I'm thinking that these photos were related to some sort of experiment to see if automobile boxcars could be used in this kind of service. Flat cars would have been in high demand for all sorts of war-related cargos, but with the domestic automobile industry largely shut down for production of other war goods, there would have been a large fleet of automobile cars available for other uses. If light tanks could be accommodated, that would have been very useful – and as a bonus, their movements would have been less viewable.

Of course, if the floorboards on the automobile cars couldn't take the load... but I'll bet they could accommodate armoured cars, and likely trucks of the day.

Yeah, this is their reasoning:

These moved on dedicated freight trains with expedited schedules, covering the 900 miles between New York and Chicago in as little as 32 hours.

And the description:

With all-new tooling to capture the look of the prototypes, the WalthersProto X29b features the correct larger body, 7' Youngstown doors, a diagonal panel roof and 4/3/1 Dreadnaught ends, and come finished in the early silver scheme with the circle Keystone.

Although I’m not a Pennsy expert, I haven’t heard of such trains. I’ll take the word of those of you more informed. I also have no need for a caboose, of course.

I’d happy to go in on a set with one or several others, and take my chances on one or two cars’ worth. I suspect that since they are only being sold in a set, the resale value individually would cover costs if I/we decided they weren’t up to my/our standards. I do hope the roof is separate, I’d rather do the earlier rectangular panel roof since that will cover a greater period of my modeling era.

Definitely Westerfield. Much better than the Tichy ones, and Andrew has most roads that owned them.

This is a nice, uncommon view of Southern's first generation of steel gondolas. These were largely rebuilt into composite cars by the mid-late 1920s, so it is nice to see an original version with underframe details and the windup shafts for the drop doors.

SEEKING A SMALL ITEM

WILLIAM PARDIE

There was a flurry of posts on the Grandt Line Oil Distributor a while back.  I was fortunate In having purchased one of the original kits and a second  from the San Juan release.

With this I eiected to do a six tank facility with three vertical and three horizontal tanks.  I wanted flat tops on the vertical tanks.  The two kits left me one short of ends.  I would prefer to buy a pop-in as opposed to cutting a perfect circle.  Hopefully someone might have an end to sell.

Thanks:

Bill Pardie
