I believe Southern converted some of the double sheathed, double door boxcars (like the Sunshine model) early in WWII. I have never seen a picture and I can't explain the apparent vent.

Thanks! I had thought they might be resin (like Roger Chrysler's Canadian "
Cockshutt" tractors)
or even 3D printed.

The Wiking tractors had the exhaust pipe oriented vertically where on the Fords it ran horizonally along the frame.  I moved the pipes (which were delicate and easily broken) and painted the tractors red and gray like the Fords I had seen.

The instructions have disappeared but that is ok. Can anyone help me find a few photos of these cars? When I started this car I just followed the directions. I didn't know better, and my first few resin cars were Westerfield.  You can just follow the instructions. Since then (14 years!) I have realized that I should have more materials.

I think National Scale Car has a mini kit for the same cars now. The cars were in the 32500-33299 number series and constructed by ACF.

Brian,
The 2005 Sunshine mini-kit was for different series of MoPac 40’ box cars built in 1942 in which the side sill door reinforcement extended from bolster to bolster, unlike the AAR model offered by InterMountain that is based on the more common design having separate side sill connections to the bolsters, crossties and crossbearers. The prototype cars were MP 34113-34262, StLB&M 17501-17600, and I-GN 17751-17825. The kit also includes doors with Union Duplex hardware.

Attached is a jpg scan of the information page included with the mini-kit. One comment I’ll offer is that MoPac’s box cars of this period were painted a red-brown shade (i.e., box car red) and not oxide red.

Bill,  I believe those are the new etched ladders from Plano that came in the kit.

I will say that is some excellent modeling on everybody's part and thanks for sharing it.   I really liked the hangers for the brake rods as those add a lot of visual interest.  I never thought to use some phosphor bronze wire and a Tichy turnbuckle for the brake cylinder rod.  I will have to give that a try.

This build utilizes across the board an interesting progression on building etched ladders.  Could the builders elaborate on howthey created the many perfectly spaced rungs?

RE: patch panel on end
Note there also appears to be a seam on the bottom end panel (same place as on the top end panel)
Hard to tell w/o the whole end, but I'll speculate:
ends were from a wider car and had to be cut down to fit width of this car?
Joints were staggered (right side of end on top/bottom panel, left side of end for middle panel)?

Thoughts?

Outstanding models as always, Fenton.  Thank you for sharing your work.  I’m looking at my stash of CB&T, McKean and Front Range kits with new eyes!  I missed out on many of the Sunshine kits so it’s helpful to see great modeling with these alternatives, and at a more budget friendly level.

PFE R-40-23 sidesill reinforcements

Richard Townsend

Tony's PFE book tells us that in the 1950s PFE added sidesill reinforcements to R-40-23, R-40-20, and other steel reefers. I would like to know the dimensions of those reinforcements, particularly their depth.

Re: New Decal Available

O Fenton Wells

For some reason I got the 40 ft DD boxcar bug after Martin left us and had a terrible time finding those cars at what I considered a reasonable price.  But I started using the CB&T, McKean and Front Range kits with new doors and ends and other appliances and they look great in my opinion (yes of course I'm biased).  Here is the B&O M-59 from a  Front Range kit and Chad Boas made the ends, doors and side sill reinforcements.  Also the SAL AF-4 using a McKean kit with Chad Boas ends and doors and side sill reinforcements.  Chad has been very helpful with freight car parts but so has Speedwitch and several others.  So go for it.

Re: Southern Boxcar 3218

O Fenton Wells

Gary, I don't have that book nor do I have a photo of the car you are talking about but my 1951 SRR ORER shows series 3200-3239 were 40'-6" ft wd express cars with steel underframe, class BX.  That's as much help as I can offer.  I've never seen a photo of one.
