Re: WP 50 DD ss box to 40 DD ss box conversion
Benjamin Hom <b.hom@...>
Charlie Vlk asked:
"A neat conversion. How close is it to what prototype(s)?" It's closest to the WAB radial roof SS automobile boxcars. It scales out about 1' too long and ~4-6" too high. The number of roof carlines will be correct but are slightly off in spacing. The MDC doors are 6'-6'; the Wabash cars look to be 5'-6' or 5'-7'. The end door is a decent match to the WAB cars; the A end will have to be replaced with a 3/3/3 Dreadnaught end (the Tyco 50 ft plug door boxcar is one source!) or 5/5/6 Murphy end. See George Drake's article in the November/December 1980 Mainline Modeler for more information on the Wabash cars. "The same conversion could be done in N with the Walthers car." If the N scale Walthers car is the same as the HO car, it has a peaked roof vice the radial roof. I'm not sure what prototypes would match. Ben Hom |

building craftsman kits
Mike Barone <mike_barone@...>
Gentlemen:
I'm reposlting this note as it appears that my computor did not send it last week. While I've been on the group for a couple of months I haven't written in before so I'm still fairly knew to it. Some of the comments under "building craftsman kits" have prompted to note some of my experiences. First: in regard to heating resin kit parts to flatten them be very carefull. I recently tried to flatten a resin passenger car roof the was very slightly bowed, about 1/16", in the middle. I put it into oven on a plate glass surface and set at 150 degrees. The treatment didn't flatten the roof as the temperature was too low. It was however high enough to shrink it 1/8". The car now has a new wood roof. If at all possible avoid heating the resin parts to flatten them. I find that once the part is attached to other parts it will be straight, if not, internal bracing is better. Second: I would suggest even more caution in regard to using toaster ovens flatten or bake paint as your model will be a matter of an inche or two from the elements where the localized temperature could be high enough to melt solder. In a regular oven the model or parts will be some distance form the elements so the temperature will be much more even and considerable lower. Mike Barone |

-------------- Original message from Bud Rindfleisch <BlackDiamondRR@...>: -------------- Hello, Tim O. mentioned cars used for bulk flour loading not being used for other purposes, that is most likely correct. The part about vermin and rats crawling in the cars seems a little farfetched. The rats I saw were on the ground, why would they try to climb into the car when it was plentiful on the ground? Shortly after my brief stint on the BCK I worked as a yard clerk for the LV, whose yard was close to the BCK and along with the EL was a co-owner of the BCK. In the LV's Tifft yard was a track known as the "cooper track" which is where these 40' boxcars got placed for cleaning out of leftover flour. That area was teeming with rats and I had to throw pieces of ballast ahead of me at night to scatter the rats before I got there. Had to walk the yards to get car numbers in this pre computer era. Never heard of rat droppings in Cheerios but I have heard stories about some awful gross ingredients in hot dogs, ketchup, etc. Bud Rindfleisch Yahoo! Re: Wabash to the B&O at Decatur
There is really no way to tell from the list, where the

cars originated. Wabash could have picked them up either at Council Bluffs or Kansas City, or even somewhere else. And of course, since they are listed over several days, there could be multiple paths. At Kansas City, cars could have arrived via the UP or via the Rock Island. Potatoes were grown in very large quantities in California, so the presence of spuds does not automatically mean they came from Idaho. A question that interests me, personally, is whether the list dates from after the time when the B&O gave up control of the Chicago & Alton. Before giving up control, B&O probably would prefer to take delivery from the Alton rather than from one of the Alton's competitors... Thanks for posting this. Very interesting. Any idea |

Some additions to your excellent station symbol list:Thanks for the additions, John. As for FAD, most of the entries in the list are based on photographic evidence, but it isn't always easy to make out the stenciling on the cars in the photos, and it is sometimes the case that a car was reweighed off-line. Variations in lettering style may make this obvious, but not always. If we just all keep chipping away at it, we'll eventually resolve most of the anomalies and fill in most of the blanks. Richard H. Mr. Brewer,
Some additions to your excellent station symbol list: 1. EMR on the ACL is Emerson Shops (Rocky Mount, NC) 2. Add SAV for Savannah to the SAL table 3. I've never heard of "FAD" on the Seaboard. "Here's the part that ties this into the MDC 50ft car string: I've got three of these cars, one of them is to try to cobble up a CP "minibox", using the roof from the MDC car. I'd like to use the ends from a Red Caboose X29, if they are compatible. Same number of corrugations.... (I don't like the quality of the F&C minibox end castings.)" The Red Caboose X29 ends will work - they match up well with the MDC radial roof. You'll have to file down the top rib to match the CP end and possibly have to add styrene to the top of the roof to match the curve of the MDC roof. Walt Lankenau wrote: "I had once started to kitbash a batch of CP miniboxes using the Santa Fe steel reefer by C&BT Shops as a starting point. The Intermountain Santa Fe reefer shell might be an even better starting point, also having the reverse Dreadnaught end. Overall, the Santa Fe reefer body is quite close to the CP box dimensionally, and the door is even the right size (therefore, so are the body panels). I don't remember which roof I intended to use; maybe the Central Valley NP stock car roof." Sounds like a good use for the old C&BT kits, which have been largely superceded by the Intermountain cars. (The detail sprues were crap anyway, so they're no real loss.) The CV NP stockcar roof doesn't match the prototype Hutchins radial roof; again, you can harvest one from the MDC 50 ft SS automobile boxcar. Ben Hom |
