Anyone familiar with said book published by Motor Books?Ed, My wife bought that book for me for Christmas. Excellent book on freight yard design and operation. It covers the major freight yards of each of the Class 1 railroads in the US and Canada, plus a handful of smaller ones, like the IHB. Great photos, and excellent trackplans of the yards. These were follow-on orders to 500 other cars built in 1940, series 91001-91500 (GSC O.O. 291). The 91501-91800 had Superior hand brakes, Apex running boards, Dreadnaught Ends, Murphy roof, and Creco doors (7-panel). They appear much like 1937 AAR box cars except that the door openings were 7'-3". By the way, don't say "7' doors" or else you'll have the wrath of Jeff Koeller upon you (remember Jeff's Naperville presentation?). The #36945 came from series 36801-37000 built by Pressed Steel Car Co. 12-42. There is a builder's photo in the National Archives of Canada Merrilees Collection (car #36976). The #19125 may have been renumbered from the original 36001-36500 series, built by GSC (O.O. 245) in 1937. The 36001-36500 series had irregularly spaced 16-panel sides but had drop ends. Interestingly, the 4/55 ORER does not list any 19xxx series for B&LE, nor does the 4/57 ORER. I don't have any 1956 ORERs that are handy to check. Hope this helps. Regards, Ed Hawkins

Greg Martin
Hey Yuze Gize,
I ran the photo through Photo Shop and cleaned it up(actually let the computer do most of the work) and the it makes a world of difference. It is not clear to me why the difference on the color of the roof on the X29(and yes there is more than one) but I believe that is light reflection. Actually an interesting shot. IF you have a program like that you might consider a fix. Greg Martin

Re: Strange PRR Boxcar Roof Color
The picture is of poor quality, but it shows a PRR X29First of all, I believe X29 roofs were galvanized. And also painted. Second of all, the color on the roof can also be seen on the pipe loads, and on several other box car roofs in the same photo. Looks like reflected light to me. Some re-roofed NYC 1920's box cars did receive unpainted galvanized roofs. I recall seeing a fine color photo of a NKP train rounding a curve in RMJ (?) that showed this. Tim "the BB" O.

Ted,
I think Standard Steel Car built some gons for the B&LE. Keith Retterer's catalog has a lot of B&LE stuff in it. I'll look tonight and see what's actually listed. Shawn Beckert

While browsing the Los Angeles Public Library's onlineI'd bet it's the lighting. You see this often in overhead shots where flat surfaces catch the light. But I'd defer to the PRR experts out there. B&LE questions
Ted Culotta <tculotta@...>
I have some B&LE photos that have prompted questions that I want to ask.
The first two photos are of gons. One is B&LE 36945, blt. 12/1942, photographed ca. 10/1951. It is a 46'0" IL gon with 16 panel steel sides, of irregular spacing and drop ends. The second is B&LE 19125, blt. 5/1937, photographed ca. 5/1956. It is a 46'7" IL gon with 16 panel steel sides, of irregular spacing with fixed ends. Does anyone know the builder(s) for these cars? The third photo is of B&LE 91775, blt. 4/1941, photographed ca. 3/1960. It looks to be a 1937 AAR box car with 7' doors. Anyone know the builders for these cars? Regards, Ted Culotta

I believe what we're looking at is a trick of light off the roof of a freshly repainted boxcar with a flat roof.
