I like Tony Thompson's approach. He publishes in the magazines, and then refers to the articles, corrects them, summarizes them, or expands on them in his blog.

Agreed. I've got more dental picks of more kinds than I can begin to describe.
Also, your doctor can be a source of tools. In some circumstances they just throw away tools rather than go to the cost
