I'm surprised nobody has commented that the left hand "Battleship" gondola is lettered USN. I suppose it's appropriate letter on a battleship. (Ewwww!) I'm supposing that these cars were

The War Emergency 2-Bay hoppers were also Timesavers. The brake detailing and underframe was assembled with the body.

And the steel weight is separate and securely taped to the bottom of the box. It gets glued to the top of the floor / underframe assembly.

Re: Weight Of An Industrial Boiler?
If a standard flat car is about 9’ wide, then the boilers in the prototype photo are smaller boilers. They are more like 6’ wide.

P2k "Time Saver" kits
I have a bunch of Proto 2000 models that have become surplus to my needs, that are going on e-Bay this weekend. Some are fully assembled, some are kits, and some are Time-Saver kits. I seem to recall

Re: boxcars can be lined up on two tracks
There is an interesting feature about this. Unlike box cars which had sliding doors, Reefers had double leaf swing doors needed to seal the car air tight. That is why the doors were only 4’ wide.

I spent 2 summers in the big CPR freight sheds in Lambton Yard in Toronto. The bridge plates were used on a lot of the cars. The shed was long and cars were always beside each other on adjacent tracks

Los Angles Produce Terminal arrangement, but their 12 tracks were at an angle. Reefers could be unloaded 3 at a time using bridge plates between far 2. There was always one against a dock, 36 cars
