And all this time I just thought that normal interchange rules
were in effect. Is someone implying that southbound loads
are exceeding the number of northbound empties?

Tom,
I will gladly trade you the 16 inches, and growing, snow cover at my home in Vermont
for the balmy 50's in FL. This is why we call it building season up north.

AAR Twin hopper rebuilt into Covered hopper:
Just saw this pic on rrpicturearchives.
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1709105
It looks like an old AAR hopper rebuilt into a covered hopper. Any opinions?
thanks

I believe the C&O moved some those early cast frame trucks used on 55-ton hopper cars for use under 40-ton box cars that had arch-bar trucks.

The DM&IR had small fleet of wood refrigerator and box cars with arch bar trucks that they used for service on their line. They were used into the 1970's. But this may be a unique case.
