Re: Photo: NYC Flat Car S-498123 With Condenser Parts (1924)
You're right, Dave. I overlooked the dimensions on the table in Richard's article. The photo does answer the question about the trucks for this series though.

Re: South Georgia Railway boxcar #1601
Bill and Garth,
Thanks for the information from the ORERs.
Examining the photos, I can make out “NEW 2(?)-34, and the Mt. Vernon Car Mfg. Co. builder’s stencil to the right of the doors.

Paul:
My notes indicate that NYC 498000-489499 were only 40-0 over end sills and had 11 stake pockets.
I think it is the 496000-496299 series that is closest to the Red Caboose model (42-1 OL, 12

This is the prototype for the Red Caboose 42' flat car, isn't it? Richard's RMJ article has a question mark for the type of trucks used under this series of cars and this photo shows them very

Steve,
Cool car! I have an ORER listing from April 1951 which shows one boxar from what I presume is this series. It is South Georgia 1600, an XM: 40' 6" IL, 9' IW, 10' 2 1/4" IH, 12' 1" doors, 3739

I just checked the Jan 1953 ORER, and, at that time, South GA Railway only had 4 freight cars in interchange service. They had two 40 ft. flats (#875, 876) and 35 ft. flat (#877) and one 40

You’re probably correct; both cars were built in 1912 when T-section trucks were popular

How will those two cars remained coupled? The draft gear must be quite out of alignment!
