SP H-70-6 Covered Hopper 1949 Version
I sort of like interesting kit bashing projects so I obtained a Bowser kit for the SP 2 bay 70 ton covered hopper. I actually ordered two but Walthers only shipped my LHS one. Intermountain is out of their RTR version and they are scarce on eBay. Unless Andy Carlson has a kit for one in his store room, I am probably out of luck anyway. This kit only cost me $16 so it is more for the fun of the bash.
After closer examination of the kit, it is much closer to the 1949 H-70-6 than the 1946 H-70-4 so I will start the bash with the hope of coming close to that model. I would have preferred the Intermountain model with separate grab irons instead of the solid grabs of the Bowser kit. The Bowser kit appears to have an apex running board but the brake platform has no tread. I will try to get a Plano #091 Apex running board/walkway to fix that. Also it has a very wide coupler box which detracts from the end platform look. Fortunately I have a copy of SP Freight Cars volume 5 with plenty of pictures and information particularly about the specialties SP used on the car. According to Tony Thompson the H-70-6 uses ASF A-3 70 Ton trucks and an Ajax hand brake. I have both on hand. A quick swab with Testors ELO on a cotton bud and a wash in warm soapy water has removed the later large block SOUTHERN PACIFC lettering. So the project has started.

old Southern Pacific movie on Youtube
An amusing little 1931 film "Other Men's Women" about railroad workers
with many wonderful scenes of Southern Pacific steam and freight cars - and they even staged a real sideswipe collision of a steam locomotive and an SP caboose! with Jimmy Cagney in a minor bit part! Lots of railroad jargon. Excellent quality too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M64ZlYnJsM Tim O'Connor -- *Tim O'Connor* *Sterling, Massachusetts*

Re: Mystery Tank Car
Jon Miller
My original comment is based on you just can't take a flat piece
of metal and duplicate this casting for a model. It's a little
trickier than that and the folks doing resin casting that could do
this one are very few (maybe only one)! A resin model would be
great but there is the problem of sales. Richard H. always said
that there just wouldn't be enough sales to make it worth the
effort.
As to saving the ones around, that underframe must weight many tons. How to move it would be a problem even if someone said it's yours just get rid of it. It is an amazing casting for it's time in history. -- Jon Miller For me time stopped in 1941 Digitrax Chief/Zephyr systems, SPROG, JMRI User NMRA Life member #2623 Member SFRH&MS

Requesting a ride to Midway field on Saturday, OCT 20th afternoon
Andy Carlson
I am prepared to ride the commuter train from Lisle to Chicago, walking to the El for a trip to Midway for my 7:50PM departure. Though if anyone is returning to Midway by car at the same time, I would like to stow away. I would gladly help generously with the gas. Thanks, -Andy Carlson Ojai CA 805 646 3334

Re: Mystery Tank Car
John Barry
Mark, Not quite. The casting integrated the bottom of the tank with the underframe, replacing the traditionally separate structures with a single part that both carried the loads and formed the bottom course to contain the liquid cargo' This lowered the height of the car and allowed the very large 16,200 gallon car to fit in the then extant clearance diagrams. Three additional conventional plate courses were riveted to the cast underframe to form the tank. The Tk-L class came from General American with the Ajax power hand brake, KC airbrakes, and 70 ton one-level Dahlman trucks. Re: ATSF Tk-L tank car
mopacfirst
So from all this information, I still can't tell if this was a traditional tank rolled from steel plate and attached to a cast steel underframe, or if this is more like a 'water bottom' tender in which the casting forms a wetted part, and the rest of the tank is built around it.
At 16,000 gallons, I assume that these tanks would have been originally used to bring all that boiler water out to the Arizona desert, among other uses. Ron Merrick
