The tanks are US M3 Lee tanks. They were built late 1941 to the end of 1942. They began to be replaced by the better M4 Sherman tanks (a lot were sold to the British). The Lee was not a very good tank but that’s beyond the scope of this group, but it gives a time frame, late 1941- 1943, that they would have been expected to be shipping on a flat car.

Clark's train ID's
Still musing about Clark’s train photo, mostly thinking about the last two cars.
The last car would appear to be something like the 1937 AAR boxcar, a bit taller than the car ahead of it with a corrugated door.
The second to last car is a puzzle. There is no relief to the door, at all, which could indicate that it is a double sheathed wood car with a wood door. The logo on the right side is lower than most roads who placed a (sorta) round logo on the right side (like SP, GN, etc.) CGW tended to have more centered logos. Did they have any DS wood boxcars at the time of the picture?

Thanks for sharing!
I did some research on Hercules back when, and could not grasp how many product lines they were into. That’d be a huge research project in itself. They had plants all over the country, and each seemed to have a different set of tank cars serving them.
Did we not get a P2K in the red Hercules scheme?
BTW, LOVE that acid tank and its weathering!

Unfortunately, not yet. I know a guy that has been working on this for 30+ years with the intention of doing a book(s), but he is overwhelmed with data.
Every RR did their own version of how they handled it, and I am personally overwhelmed with just the PRR part of this, in the moment.
In addition, the pools changed almost yearly, with new models, changed models, and the whims of the auto makers. I can attest to the numerous code changes, stencil changes, rack changes, and classes in use, from what I’ve dug up.
For your edification, you may want to look up the various auto and parts plants on-line, to see the enormous number of same in play over the years.

Group, in modeling a gon with drop ends. The builders component sheet says that some cars had Klasing 5L-700 and the remaining cars had Universal 1995 hand brakes. Photos of of both of them show a ratchet type handbrake is there a separate detail part or a kit that has one of these modeled that the hand brake be harvested to model either the Klasing 5L-700 brake or Universal 1995 brake?

I think I showed these once before, but maybe on the Resin list. I spent quite a few hours crawling on and under the 12k and 13k series when in MOW service as part of a project to build the 12k series. These models are cast resin from my masters, representing the 82k series and later. I have yet to do the 12k in-service version, but maybe now is a good time to start.

Gary, thanks. Here is a photo of the end of one of the models and two prototype photos showing the same ends. I don't know the "proper" nomenclature, but they are "inverted". They were the limiting item until I found, IIRC, an inverted Westerfield end. I then used two to make one master with the correct inversions.. Someone asked about the roof. The master was scratched. I crawled under these cars before they were scrapped to figure out the underframe, etc., but I didn't dare climb up. The roof contour was scaled, roughly, from dimensions and photos. The ribs are styrene sanded to shape. Next model will be the steel rebuild, 12k series. Bill Bill McClure www.billmcclure.smugmug.com

Nicely modelled - an unusual looking car - I like the step detail on the MOW version. Curious to know more about that roof design - interesting with the ?gussets? aligned with the carlines on the fascia like that.

Not sure what you feel is a "mild" upgrade. The D&H shorties can be seen with four different ends, but none of them match either of the two Accurail options (plain wood or Murphy). Also, by 1949, most (maybe all) D&H cars would have sported Hutchins all-steel roofs rather than the Accurail's Murphy XLA. If you want to undertake some moderately serious bashing, I can send you a few pix off-group. If not, consider the three versions of the F&C resin kit for an easier go of it. IMO, the nearby DL&W is a much better match to the Accurail cars but, I must confess, I have not tracked them into the post-war era. The D&H was somewhat unique in its fondness for hanging onto and rebuilding pre-WWI cars. -- Dave Parker Swall Meadows, CA
