But Star Brand sticks to resin and Tru-color sure does not, thinners in common or not. And BTW Star thinner stays in its bottle, which is certainly not the case with TruC.

Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I will be going with Andy Carlson's 3/3/3 end, rather than cutting up the Roundhouse car. With a little more research I realized I needed 2/3/3 ends, so will have to make modifications. Part of the fun.

That said, the Galloway site is a walk down memory lane. And one starts to imagine other kinds of kit bash possibilities (especially clerestory baggage cars). I’m curious whether anyone has the ability to speak to the car body height on the steel boxcar kit: https://squareup.com/store/gallowayenterprises/item/acl-coast-line. The photo doesn’t show dimensional data, so no clear info about the car interior height. Door and rivets on the side look alright. I’m assuming it would require junking parts and finding others. Lots of work, but for the right model and $1, hmmm. Rob

Rob- I have molds for the WP/MP/T&P SS double door autocar, same prototype as the MDC kit. Mine has no molded on grabs and brake gear. I could cast you a polyurethane pair if that could be helpful for you. Contact me off-list if you are interested at <midcentury@...>. Regards, -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

Re: image from Homestead, PA in 1915

What catches my eye is the early interlocking steel sheet piling lining the excavations in the foreground. Here is a brief history quoted from this web site:
https://jdfieldsusa.wordpress.com/2015/03/07/history-of-sheet-piling/ "A manufacturer from the United States, Gregson, was the first to patent a bulb and jaw interlock in 1899 but this system still did not serve its intended purpose because it resulted in a flat section with a tiny section modulus. This then led to the first steel sheet pile with a U section and riveted interlocks being developed by Tryggve Larssen, the state chief engineer for the city of Bremen in Germany, at the turn of the century. Larssen’s wave shaped sheet pile was a revolutionary development because it increased the strength and efficiency of steel retaining walls. However, this design still contained an interlock system that was partially fabricated after the manufacturing process. In 1914, sheet pile with rivet-less interlocking systems made their debut in Germany. Sheet pile that has been developed since Larssen’s innovation have been based of his design concept." image from Homestead, PA in 1915

Hi List Members,
I have been having an enjoyable time taking in what there is to see on this
image from Homestead, PA in 1915 and linked below...
Zoom in to the image and have a look.
Nearest the camera, BR&P composite gon 17485, is in the process of
being loaded. The load bracing is partially in place, the vertical braces
positioned in the OUTSIDE stake pockets.
Behind it is a B&O composite gon that has completed loading of the same
material. Note that the B&O gon has vertical braces positioned both inside
the car AND on the outside, using the outside stake pockets. I imagine this
was done to provide a tight and secure non-shifting interior fit for
the load.
Are these called billets in the steel industry? The appear to be octagonal
in profile
Then further to the left we can see a steel gon with C.S.CO. reporting
marks, I am unable to make out the number. It appears this car might be missing
its coupler.
Enjoy!

Using Star Brand paint I initially had a problem with some minor chipping over time. Talking to Jimmy
Booth of PBL of the problem he told me that it is imperative that use their thinner with both TruColor and Star Brand paints because of a chemical compatibility with other thinners. Since using it I have had no problems (over 20 O scale cars). Lee Thwaits

Here's what looks to me to be Studebakers "stuffed" into a Santa Fe drop bottom gondola. Think these autos only included everything from firewall back, i.e. no motor, body & chassis in front of it. Studebaker had a plant on Los Angeles Junction Ry till it closed in 1956. A fellow LAJ modeler. Tony Debates, made the Studebaker plant for his layout (attached). Andy Jackson

Al, Greg had a number of those ends cast and they were available through him. I picked up one of if not the last one that he had at CCB this year. Greg had also been working on masters for the slightly taller ends for the Bx-32, 33 and 36. I am unaware of what has become of Greg's modeling projects.
