Looks like the photo was taken at Reading Shops, Reading PA. Lots of other neat cars surrounding it. The trucks on this car are interesting for the era, although as an online car, I suppose adequate.

No, they are door guides/rollers from Union Metal Products Co. also marketed under the National Box Car Door name. Note the rollers have grooves that giude a flange on the bottom of the door, but it looks like the N&W opted for something more substancial to hold the corners of the door when closed.

American La France firetruck Co., in Elmira NY? These cars were made, I believe, just for them. This might be unloading somewhere as I see a Western Maryland Freight House in the background and WM didn't go to Elmira.

Question: Does the service restriction actually mean it was assigned to service from some port to the Hershey factory?

Question: How many cars were in this service?

Question: What were the service dates? F&C suggests 1941-1960, but this sounds kind of fishy, and there is certainly more to this story.

Today the History Blog feature discusses two 15th century axe heads found at the site of the 1410 Battle of Grunwald. This is said to have been one of the largest middle ages European battles, and marked the beginning of the end for the Teutonic Knights.

The two axe heads, in remarkable condition, were found by a metal detectorist working under the direction of archaeologists excavating the battlefield: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/59460 .

PFE Wood Ice Reefer Listings data

In December 1959, PFE compiled two listings of their Wood ice reefers - one for cars still in service, and one for cars out of service.   Copies of those listings were obtained from the California State RR Museum Library in Sacramento, CA.   I have transcribed some of those listings into an Excel spreadsheet and sorted and summarized the data for various PFE classes.   The listings give previous car numbers for rebuilt cars, from which I have derived the previous class and underframe type.   Such info can influence modelers as to the ratio of Bettendorf to Built-Up underframes they have on their models - or pick accurate car numbers for each underframe type for the high-accuracy modeler.

Samples of the listings and those summaries that are done (classes R-30/40-18, R-30/40-19, R-30/40-21, and R-30/40-24) are presented at :

Bob indicated that the image is undated. However, the file name is "6-1019-sam-Wallis-Cub-Rail-Car-1916-jpg.jpg" which makes me think it might be dated 1916 - does that year seem within the scope of possibility?
