Looks like the photo was taken at Reading Shops, Reading PA. Lots of other neat cars surrounding it. The trucks on this car are interesting for the era, although as an online car, I suppose adequate.
Thanks for sharing these interesting photos. Bob Allan Omaha

American La France firetruck Co., in Elmira NY? These cars were made, I believe, just for them. This might be unloading somewhere as I see a Western Maryland Freight House in the background and WM didn't go to Elmira.

Friends, F&C offers a model of these cars: http://fandckits.com/HOFreight/8196.html Neat trucks, by the way. Question: Does the service restriction actually mean it was assigned to service from some port to the Hershey factory? Question: How many cars were in this service? Question: What were the service dates? F&C suggests 1941-1960, but this sounds kind of fishy, and there is certainly more to this story. Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

Noble Friends, Today the History Blog feature discusses two 15th century axe heads found at the site of the 1410 Battle of Grunwald. This is said to have been one of the largest middle ages European battles, and marked the beginning of the end for the Teutonic Knights. The two axe heads, in remarkable condition, were found by a metal detectorist working under the direction of archaeologists excavating the battlefield: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/59460 . For more on the Teutonic Knights, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teutonic_Order . They are still in business, by the way, though now a charitable organization. The Battle of Grunwald is found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Grunwald . Yours Aye, Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆

Photo: Reading 12343A He commented, " 'To be used exclusively at Hershey, Pa.' So we have a wooden Cocoa bean boxcar 12343 A, the suffix meaning in special service. No doors so hatchbacks on roof and hopper discharge underneath. Dated 7/41, but not sure that's the Built date. Looks new in photo, but could be rebuilt in Reading Shops. Original covered hopper car? Wooden foot block on rail to prevent drifting for photo shoot. Looks like string of brand new (or rebuilt) coal hopper cars in background. Would make interesting model. Reading Company photos." Interesting car. Anyone know its background? Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA

PFE Wood Ice Reefer Listings data
Dick Harley
In December 1959, PFE compiled two listings of their Wood ice reefers - one for cars still in service, and one for cars out of service. Copies of those listings were obtained from the California State RR Museum Library in Sacramento, CA. I have transcribed some of those listings into an Excel spreadsheet and sorted and summarized the data for various PFE classes. The listings give previous car numbers for rebuilt cars, from which I have derived the previous class and underframe type. Such info can influence modelers as to the ratio of Bettendorf to Built-Up underframes they have on their models - or pick accurate car numbers for each underframe type for the high-accuracy modeler.
Samples of the listings and those summaries that are done (classes R-30/40-18, R-30/40-19, R-30/40-21, and R-30/40-24) are presented at :
https://harley-trains.smugmug.com/PFE-FRT-DATA/PFE-Wood-Ice-Reefer-Rebuilds/ I am still working on other car classes, but it is tedious work and may be awhile before I get more done. For more info about PFE Wood Ice Reefer underframes, see: https://harley-trains.smugmug.com/PFETrainPhotos/PFE-Wood-Ice-Reefers/Bettendorf-vs-Built-Up/ If you would like a copy of the detailed Excel files, or want to help transcribe the data, contact me at: Dick -dot- Harley4UP -at- verizon -dot- net Enjoy, Dick Harley Laguna Beach, CA

Hi Bob and List Members,
Bob indicated that the image is undated. However, the file name is
"6-1019-sam-Wallis-Cub-Rail-Car-1916-jpg.jpg" which makes me think it might
be dated 1916 - does that year seem within the scope of possibility?

So, a completely??different question from looking at this picture:?? whose version of radial roof would this be, based upon the visible stampings as we see them from the underside?Climax radial, N&W's favorite in the late 1920s and early 1930s. David Thompson

Prototype Rails in Cocoa Beach, FL has been postponed
Aley, Jeff A
Prototype Rails postponed to January 6 - 8, 2022
Prototype Rails, normally held each January in Cocoa Beach, Florida, has been postponed. The current Covid-19 pandemic makes it impossible for us to plan a safe, high-quality meet for January 2021.
We are putting our efforts towards kicking off 2022 with the high-quality clinics, fellowship, vendors, and sunshine that you’ve come to expect. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us at the Cocoa Beach [Florida] Hilton on January 6 – 8, 2022.
Stay safe, and we’ll see you at the Beach!
