The image that Andy Jackson posted (and the original boxcar photo) show Studebaker bodies being shipped to the LA assembly plant.  The autos did not have frames, drive train, or front end panels...they stopped at the firewall.  That all came together at the assembly plant.  The pre-WWII models seemed to ship in boxcars, postwar (larger) bodies moved in ATSF gondolas. There used to be a wonderful collection of railroad-related images on South Bend's history by Tom Kepshire (moved to monon.org after his death), but it seems to have been shut down in 2018.  Here is a link via The Internet Wayback Machine, with plenty of associated information and freight cars!

Further to what I said below----

The October 1959 ORER does not show the D&RGW 50343 either.

The July 1970 ORER does show the car in the 50150-50499 series (341 cars) and in Note NN are shown to be leased from United States Railway Equipment Company.

I will leave it to others to find just when they got to the Rio Grande and from where they came.

There used to be a Studebaker plant on the Los Angeles Junction Ry in Vernon CA, not LA proper. Here's an image of autos (Studebakers ?) in a Santa Fe gondola Looks like they are loaded without front ends like in Doug's image.

That’s another fine looking model, Bob! Many railroads seem to have unique woodrack designs.

 

While you note using plaster cast loads, another modeler uses trimmings from his grape arbor for pulpwood loads. Just another possibility for modelers to consider.

L&N’s #20300-20349 series woodracks began life as 1920s low-side composite gondolas, rebuilt in 1940 into woodracks. F&C’s B&O P-11 flatcar is a near-perfect match for the carbody; as on the prototype, the bulkheads were soldered from used rail. Added detailing includes grabs, brake system, brakestaff, stake pockets, uncoupling levers, diagonal stay rods, and used rail as edge risers. The load is cast plaster.

p.s. THANKS for the on- and off-line offers from several STMFC listers to harvest and send natural "logs" from their backyards. I'm already fixed with the plaster loads for the woodrack fleet -- not as nice as the natural material, but OK at three feet. One more example of what a great group this is. Again -- thanks!

The early Kadee PS1 dates from the early 50s. But Kadee came out with another late 40s body last year. There was a great clinic on the differences at Collinsville two years ago by someone this list. Hopefully he will chime in.

The ACL rule was that all open top revenue cars were to be black. It did not matter if the coating was paint or car cement. This policy continued with the formation of SCL and beyond. The only exception that I recall was cushion underframe box cars (sliding sill or end-of-car) were painted black. The use of car cement ended in the early 1960s from what I recall. As far as I know the last use of it was on wood chip hoppers. If you see a photo of a wood chip hopper with the stencil paint "bleeding" and running down the car side, that car was coated with car cement. Car cement's only redeeming attribute was that it was cheep. The ACL was too--I worked there (and loved it).

If I remember my Studebaker history correctly, you are correct, they would be unloading the bodies at the LA plant.  The bodies were built in South Bend Indiana, then shipped by rail to LA for final assembly.
