Somewhere in the memory banks I have a vague recollection that the Soo had a class of cars that were perhaps "closest" to the R/C double door car. No matter, it's not a precise match for anything that I know of, other than the Intermountain O scale double door 1937 AAR boxcar!

You need not "suspect" it, that's exactly what it is -- a 1937 AAR 10'0" IH
box car. The A-50-13 and many other auto cars of that era were taller cars.
Sunshine produced many of them:

On the other hand, the RC kit is a pretty good looking stand-in if you don't
want to build (or can't buy) the Sunshine kit.

Athearn (not long ago) produced a model (possibly MDC tooling I don't know --
I think the last model MDC produced was a 1937 AAR box car) that is a taller car
and is also a very reasonable looking stand-in.

      In an earlier posting I mentioned that I had seen listings of several pages of car numbers on different railroads dealing with open top lumber loads on the NP and I would try to post these.

      I have added a new file with these pages and a bit more dealing with routing info, history and this new file can be found under the name: Open Top Lumber Carload adjustments to car loads - NP Railway.

     The file is open and if anyone wants to add accurately available cars that match numbers of any of the cars listed, please feel free to add this to the folder.

So Fenton, the Red Caboose 40-ft model not is not correct given the roof and side sill configuration (not tabbed). Also the doors are staggered to the left while on the RC model they are staggered to the right, although more technical language is probably needed to describe the difference.

Yes the early cars, 1935 Pressed Steel Car Co. (272000-272499) had the Hutchins roof but the 1937 Mt. Vernon cars (272500-272999) had the Hutchins Improved Dry Lading roof (flat panel roof) The later cars had a different side sill and 25 of them received end doors (272500-272524)in Feb of 1941.  The underframes may be different as well but that is something I don't model to any specific form, as long as what you can see from the layout looks close to the drawing I'm good.  I leave those details to the good modelers like yourself.

The Red Caboose NP cars represent ex-EL 51400-51999 boxcars leased from A.A. Morrison in 1962, rebuilt with double staggered doors, and assigned NP series 38168-38167. See diagram at <research.nprha.org/NP%20Box%20Cars/Forms/DispForm.aspx?ID=42&ContentTypeId=>

SAL 22000-22199 were Class AF2 which had the round roofs. SAL 22200-22499, Class AF3, are the cars represented by the Red Caboose model.

A lot of these cars went off the home roads, in my area alone the Ann Arbor had a raft of these cars, half were in service to the Dundee Cement Plant in Dundee Michigan and the rest furnished sand from Yuma, MI to the Ford Engine Casting Plants in Lima and Cleveland, Ohio.

The Detroit and Toledo Shoreline cars were also in sand service to the same locations from their sand pit in Rockland, MI.

The Wabash served a sand pit in Wolcottville, IN and shipped the sand to various concrete plants in Northwestern, Ohio as their sand was approved by ODOT for use in concrete on Highway Projects.

The NKP serviced the Diamond Shamrock plant and send Soda Ash and other Soda products all over the country using the smaller cars and as car size increased they substituted the newer cars as Soda Ash was a lighter product.

Hello Group!

Perhaps this question has been asked and answered but please allow me to pursue, "What are the proper prototypes for this 4/5 Dreadnaught end car?"  It seems likely that it is essentially the 1937 (10 foot IH) car with a nominal 12'-2" door opening, "W" corner posts.  A quick look at some of the ready references presents----
        
        SAL 22000-22449 ( two groups)
        SOU 272000-272999

There are other possibilities with 5/5 ends, sq. corner ends, other roofs, etcetera.  Perhaps any option requires a review and change of the underframe-side features.  RC offered LV and NP (and other) painted versions but these two seem not grounded in ORER reality (1946, 1958).  So....what are the good prototypes?
