I like the subtle change in shade on the repainted areas for the weight and repack stencils. Very nice!

I don’t understand your comment re: a “shadow” around the decal edges. Nothing shows up on my images and except in 1 spot where a little white from an adjoining decal was included when I cut from a sheet. The posted image, being low rez, might be slightly distorted. I’ve attached a close up of lettering but also low rez just to be emailable. I don’t seen any “shadow” around lettering that you asked about. Maybe I’m missing something?
The car was painted Floquil Grimy black with 10% gloss added and the thin-film decals nestled in quickly with diluted Solvaset, then full-strength Solvaset on the 2nd application. The car was oversprayed with Rustoleum Frosted Clear, when weathering applied in multiple layers on top of that. No clear coat was applied after dusting simply because the coating obliterates the powders.
These cars were used to haul plasterboard (“sheet rock”) and the loads were wrapped in Gold Bond orange and white sheets. I’m planning to create this load and present it to the B&O Modeler staff as a follow up article.

Re: Photo: WP Boxcar 20807

The fun part is - there were 7 variations of WP paint &
lettering rendered for these. And...the paint & lettering
designs were done by the Passenger Car department, not freight (as
"normal" efforts were.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
This is likely because most freight cars were rendered by the railroad - they didn't give the manufacturer an option in the design. In this case, there is
All rendered by the Engineering Department; Color & Design Division; Passenger Car Division; Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Co. Unfortunately - the images were b/w photos of what are likely color drawings - there is no way to really tell which is freight car red, orange, aluminum, aluminum with orange stripe, etc. One of these days, I'll have to look for the drawings C&D 7-3411-51 And..yes, Tony - a lot - almost as many as Overnight SP cars, Big Boys, Fs, B&O docksiders, AT&SF boxcars & cabooses, etc.

You're correct, Fred - standard PS-1 underframe. Chrysler trucks.

Re: Weight Of An Industrial Boiler?
What we do not know, and do not NEED to know is the operating purpose of these boilers. If they are building heating boilers, they likely operate at 15 to 30 PSI. If they are power boilers, they possibly operate at 100 to 200 PSI. There would be a major difference in the thickness of materials used and thus difference in weight. You may well decide that yours are heating boilers and are a fairly light load. Chuck Peck

Shoot. That’s what I get for posting before I’m fully awake. Fred you’re right these just had compartmentizers. I got them confused with the 1954 cars with the cushion under frame.

Re: former VGN cars?

Hello Dan,
don't know if it was there (but I believe), but I remember the story of using some of these cars for scrap iron movements. Someone said that the cars in that service were WAY overloaded - wich is easy to believe comparing the densitiy of scrap steel and that of coal, for which they originally were designed. Such a car FULLY loaded with scrap steel probabaly weighed in excess of 200 tons, and it has been stated that occasionally a car just broke in half at the short way from scrap loading to plant...
Johannes, sad that none of these cars has been preserved

A few of the big ex VGN “Battleship” gons ended up at Northwestern Steel & Wire in Rockford, IL. They were being moved about by a bunch of ex GTW 0-8-0 and 2-8-2 steam locos, also in terrible shape.

Re: boxcars can be lined up on two tracks
Richard McQuade
What a great shot! Thanks, James. It is interesting to see how the cars are spread out. Looks like not all might be 40' cars. The shed where I worked was built after WW2 so all of our cars were coupled together in a continuous string and were over 99% CPR cars - all 40' steel cars.
The other interesting item about this is the roofing material used on the freight shed. This is the second shot I've seen of a large shed with tarpaper roofing. Photos in the Vancouver BC public library collection show the same material being used on the main CPR Vancouver freight shed in 1915. Richard

As far as I know WP 20801-20820 was a regular 1951 PS-1 order with an experimental WP paint scheme. Fred Jansz

Kadee has stated several times are not doing those cars and the other cars with the experimental features because they’d have to tool a new underframe. Maybe in time they will change their mind.

Thanks to all that replied, both on and off list. It looks like the partial assembly fell short of moving these kits into the "easy build" category, so I think I'll stick with describing them as "partially assembled" and leave it at that.

Re: Weight Of An Industrial Boiler?
vapeurchapelon
Bob,
having built and repaired lots of (steam locomotive) boilers a long time ago, I wouldn't say these boilers are very large. Even by allowing a certain surcharge to the wall thickness (don't know the operating pressure) I would estimate around 15 tons for the larger type, 20 tons at the most, and less than half of that for the smaller type.

The dimensions I listed are calculated from the Multi Scale website so the boilers in the photo, which are on their website, are smaller that the scale of the model. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA
